When I started running T4RotM, I only picked up the slack because TRDCal hadn't posted in a few days and I was afraid there wouldn't be enough time for nominating and voting. Because of this, I went with all of his precedents and followed the format he'd set up. It seemed to work well with 5 and at that time only fewer options were allowed in a poll (that was expanded by admin so that T4RotY could allow 11 entrants).

Well this Fall, Cal got very busy and asked me to fully take the reigns and I did. Unfortunately a couple months after I realized how much of a relief it had been to be able to just handle the one month's contest at the end/beginning of the month as there is more involved than just posting the thread as most members see.

So I asked if anyone would be interested in helping out and quickly got some responses. I assumed everyone would continue following Cal's precedents as I did but things got changed a little.

And that's fine, BUT I think we need to be consistent in how the poll is ran no matter who is running it so I've posted this thread.

I'm hoping some members will share this in their gen's respected sub forums so that this gets exposure all over and all members get the opportunity to be involved in this decision. (Since I can't get it put in the sidebar with otm already there)

So do you think we should

A - Keep the elections limited to 5 entrants

B - Let in anyone who gets seconded

With option A it would be up to the present month's poll poster to decide which 5 get in. I personally start with those with the most 2nds, with remainder being made up of those who got seconded in first in chronological order. I hope that would continue, but since I'm not running it every month it wouldn't be up to me.

If option B is chosen, the poll would begin on the 10th (as previously set) or when 15 entrants (the max number of options a poll allows for) is reached.

My opinion - (this was originally in the first post but I decided to make it a 2nd post so that my opinion would be lumped with other members instead of right there in the OP as if it has authority)

I personally like 5 as it gives all entrants a better shot at getting more votes; past months have shown that the voting tends to favor 1-2 entrants, and the rest of is split up amongst others. When that rest is split up 7-8 ways (instead of 3) those 'others' tend to get far fewer votes and (I believe) some members immediately vote for one of the 2 leaders simply because they feel their vote won't count if they choose someone far removed from the lead. But it's not up to me, it's up to you the members so I thought I'd add a poll.

I agree - I like having a smaller pool of nominees and I think that voting definitely tends to be biased toward the top contenders and the others don't get seem to get votes.

I'm good with whatever.

Hah I almost posted an "I don't care" option but decided people who didn't care would probably just not vote.

Right now it's looking like the majority of people want to stick with 5 entrants, I could've sworn there were several people wanting more than 5. If so, they aren't voting...

I support the 5 entrant limit.

The multiple "seconding" is a bit odd though for anyone that has had any experience with Roberts Rules of Order where there is a motion made, it get seconded once (or not) and then voted upon.

So I would propose that it be the first 5 rigs that are nominated and seconded. Then limiting how often any particular rig can be nominated/entered will take care of keeping the field filled with new entrants each month.

The problem with using the first 5 rigs that are nominated is how quickly 5 people can be seconded. For instance this month 5 people were seconded the first day. That means those who don't surf the forum every single day can miss out on a chance to nominate or second a member.

It is only the 4th day this month and the poll is locked, that means if you were busy new years day then catching up on work the 2nd then you had no chance of having any say in the poll.

I guess we can put this to a vote as well, but I think it's only fair to give at least a week for people to get their nominations in. I'm using 10 days because that was the precedent that was set and it seems to work fine. Not all members are on here surfing all the sub forums every single day.

I agree. I like the one week rule. I had no idea the ten day thing was a precedent otherwise I'd have followed it this month. I think people who get the most seconds are indicative of who will get the most votes and make it a good contest.

yeah I thought this months poll locked in crazy fast. I've always liked the idea of the first five with the most nominations in the first 10 days of the month. Usually the only poll that has more than five entries is the t4roty for obvious reasons.

:sorry:

I never remembered this 10 day thing! I figured since I think July was when people wanted more nominees I'd keep doing it that way
