T4Runner virgin...just interested in opinions

Hello everyone. I just joined and have been cruising the forums a little bit to try and get a feel for things.
Yes, I am a 4runner virgin. I am in the process of finding the right first one...which i have found to be harder than I thought - no one wants to give up these things!
My car history includes...a 97 Jetta, 02 325i BMW (sad to see go, but had to get rid of the car payment), and curently a 92 civic si hb with a swapped motor (b20vtec). I'm feeling like getting into something bigger that will last forever and have minimal issues. So basically my research has led me to an interest in the 3rd gen's but I'm liking the changes done starting in 1999.

Right now I've got my eye on a white 1999 Limited. It has 155k on it...a little higher than I would like, but I've gotten the impression that they can go towards 300k no prob. It is beautifully clean with nice new Toyo open-country tires. Rear main seal and valve cover gasket may be leaking however.

Any advice for my search and things to look out for. Also, any common problems with the ones I'm looking at?

rear axle seals and timing belt

Look for good maintenance records and pull the VIN number and run it through a Yota dealership and see what they can tell you about the maintenance performed.

Rear axle seals are a common issue-look for residue inside of rear wheels. Also by now the timing belt with water pump should have been done around 90K miles.

Well I had my boyfriend, a honda dealership mechanic, and toyota owner, take a look at it and he found a lot more leaking than what he heard about it. Also aftermarket parts and the impression it wasnt maintained very well. So even though it was prestine on the outside, it didnt check out under the hood. Back to square one...I'm holding out for the right one!
