I got my wife the kindle fire for xmas. It works great. I can play battlefield and that thing keeps her off my back for a while.
Thanks. Looking at others. I have a regular kindle that I plan on deploying with. Wanting to use this for more of a base, and I can attach a keyboard to that I can use as a netbook to compose mail and surf with.

it depends on uses, either way i'd hold out for teh tegra 3 chips that are coming out in the next 4 months or so..
i currently have the transformer prime and honestly it kills in terms of speed and multi tasking, plus it has a 4 core processor and an additional core as well for running simple tasks, it's pretty sweet, already been rooted and overclocked to 1.7 on the 4 cores as well, the bonus to having so many corse is that when your doing simple stuff the tablet runs off the 1.2 single core processor saving battery power but when you need more power it kicks the tasks over to the quad core processor to get the work done...basically it owns and buying anything else except a quad core tablet at this point is a bit of a waste of money, meaning that 1/3 of the tablets out there are already obsolete and the nicer higher spec'd tablets currently on the market will be obsolete in 6 months to a year as opposed if you get in on the quad core now you've got a full year to 2 years before your behind the times and you get stuck with lagging apps and all of that fun stuff...always a a worry when buying any new tech, how long will it be useful until the industry has moved on to a new platform or new hardware spec as standard....
that said, unless you're a simple user don't get the tf201, or transformer prime quite yet, they are having some issues with the q/c process and bug at this point, i'd hang tight until they get things worked out.
after giving the tablet market time to to grow, ICS to finally be completed and pushed out and the hardware specs at a decent level it was now time for me to buy a tablet.
why i choose the prime:
i wanted a keyboard as sometimes i can make quite long posts on here and various other forums, along with work emails and all of the rest, i find touch screens annoying for writing anything of depth or substance , so having a tablet that was made for an accompanying dock/keyboard was top of the list, not to mention extra usb ports and an extra 8 hours of battery life for long flights - i think combined it gets somewhere around 18-20 hours moderate use
try the XDA forums those guys know what's up and can help you root through your needs and wants to help find a tablet that suits you, everyone's needs are different, the GPS on my tablet sucks but i have no need for a 11 inch GPS device in my truck and would never use the tablet for in car navigation, i have my phone and stand alone GPS device for that, some people did plan on using their tablet as a GPS device so they returned it, this is the major issue with my tablet at the moment, is very weak GPS performance...seriously though head over to XDA and start your searching there, they know everything about every device.

kindle fire is great, i bought my wife one for christmas, haven't had to talk to her since! amazing! lol, j/k, love my wife, that said though, it's not a full andriod OS unless you hack it and sideload your apps, with a bit of hacking it's a very cool tablet, otherwise it's just a souped up e-reader from my experience with playing on it, the browser is super nice and slick!

What size tablet and how much did you want to spend?
I just bought the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 a couple of weeks ago and love it. Carry it in my back pack instead of a laptop now. I just got the WiFi version as I have my GSII Epic Touch phone rooted and use it's 4G hotspot hack to tether off of for my tab.

Why no Ipad?
Its the clear market leader.
I owned the first gen ipad, but was swayed to android and bought a Galaxy Tab 10.1. The thing has been complete garbage. Frequently freezes, apps crash, software is glitchy, flash playback is laggy and barely useable. App selection is still poor. It was only with an updated a month or so ago that the facebook app would even work on my tablet.

Possibly the expense, the ipad is what 600 bucks? Kindle fire w/ a leather case was 250 lol.. And the name brand android tablets are around 400ish.

iPad 2 - I know you said it was not an option, but that is my answer as I have an Android phone that I loveD, now hate as over the past 2 years all I get are issues with it and have had to a full reset 4 times. The iPad operates flawlessly. I used to laugh at apple people, but I see why they stand behind them so much now. Depending on what you want the tablet for you might want to consider an iPad. If you are playing on the net and goofing off, go with whatever, but if you are going to use it for important things go with the apple. My next phone will not be an Android, maybe the one after that if they can not bugs out, I do like the selection of apps on the Android market at LOT more than apple, but I would rather have a working system and not have to manually reload 70 apps every few months.
The price is one thing. Another is I have just never been a fan of apple products....I still dislike using my basic Ipod. The only reason why I bought one again was it was cheaper than a Zune (after breaking 4 of them in 6 months) and more readily available in Iraq than the former. Out of the options, the one I've liked the most is the Toshiba Thrive. Its got HDMI output, USB, and micro USB. I havent seen too many other tablets that will do all that for me. I thought about a Kindle Fire, but the Tablet will do more for me (plus its got a kindle fire app). That and I can turn my phone into a hotspot to plug into the net. I also liked the feeling of it because it was more rugged feeling and had a little bit of weight to it....it didnt feel as if I was going to break it if I looked at it wrong.

I bought a USED IPAD about a year ago from craigslist < which is a GREAT place to buy used goods. You meet someone local, play with it before you buy it.
I myself have played with android tablets and they seem pretty choppy. Although, I have an android phone (galaxy s2) that blows the iphone4 out of the water, I have to give it to APPLE for their stability. The IPAD, even though it's the first gen, battery is still a champ and mostly stable.
Another thing you should think about is > what will you be using it for? I use mine for surfing the web and light application use.
One thing i DON'T like about the IPAD is file sharing with windows network, it's a draaag. So if you have a mac computer, off course that will make it easier.
do extensive reading on forums and reviews. Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more! is a California based online retailer. Their prices aren't too bad, but customer ratings is a MUST to read.

don't get me wrong, i freaking hate apple but for being deployed and where your going to it may be the best bet paired with an otter box defender case or the like, in fact the military has a contract with apple for ipads for that reason, and apparently pelican cases have produced a carry case for the ipad as well.
that said the kindle fire is NOT a full android tablet, it's an android based e-reader, a scaled down ver of a real tablet, meaning that the ver of andriod on the fire is a amazon ver of the os, i had the same problems getting my files to play on the kindle as i did on the ipad due to this, not quite as bad, but still needed to be hacked to play friendly with my file types...
so unless if your prepared to root and install a rom on your fire expect it to be somewhat limited when compared to the more expensive tablets.

Trust me, I was not a fan of apple products either, until I used them, it is amazing how much actual experience can change your mind!
Can I ask why price is a factor when your are driving a LE with TONS of fun (expensive) mods?!
Ultimately you have to do what is best for you and what you like the best to make yourself happy.
Price is a factor because I dont want to spend more than about 500. I've saved and scrimped for mods. It took 6 months to get my bumper. I paid 80 bucks for my wheels. Tires and lift came out of deployment money.
Hubby has a diesel project, so we share Mod money. Believe you me, you think 4runner mods are expensive, start looking into diesel truck mods. He racked up a wishlist of 40k in 15 minutes. And thats not counting bumpers or rock rails.

For $500 you could easily buy a new or 3 month used IPAD2 with warranty.
Get an IPAD2. I have an Android phone and while I do like certain things, Apple is the ONLY competitive manufacturer of tablets at this time.

For the record - we're not trying to 'push' you into an iPad; while I do own a Mac, an iPad, and an iPhone, I actually did everything to ensure that they were *NOT* my first choices.
However....while there are many other tablets that are 'more capable' or have more ports, better display, etc., suffice to say that the iPad 2 is the most 'cohesive.' Darn near every other tablet I've seen is excellent in several ways, but has at least one glaring error (e.g., subpar display, for instance).
There's a reason that they've pretty much redefined every market they enter into; I held out for a LONG time on getting one; but now that I have one, I wish I'd gotten one sooner.

I think that this is a common theme among folks who went Android first, like myself. Unlike Kung, i have a Sony & Asus laptops at home...love the Sony to bits! Had 2 3rd gen Ipod Touch for my kids...but that's it. Had 2 Android top-tier phones...and then finally, this past November, bit the bullet and got an iPhone 4S to try out. My thoughts now are same as Kung above.

FYI, ours isn't an all-Mac household. My wife has an HP dv6000 laptop; I've got an HP 2000-363nr that I picked up for a song (Black Friday deal); and I've got an Acer Aspire Easystore H340 running WHS 2011. It hosts all of my files, and starts up each computer at 2 a.m. and does differential backups, then shuts 'em down again.

As with most things in life you get what you pay for. I have a feeling you did not get a 'cheap' bumper because you did not want to spend over $xxxxx for it.
You would be happiest with the iPad, but we all have to make sacrifices here and there. Good luck & enjoy whatever new toy you get!
