New Instrument Cluster in

It's all in now. Took them a day. The new odometer with it had nearly 1,000 miles less on it than the old one. The odometer also runs about 3% low, so this means I'll actually get about 104,000 on my 100k warranty.

They also replaced the soft clear plastic covers - the whole unit basically!

I wonder how much that instrument cluster was to replace? It was all covered, including the rental car, and I just forgot to ask.

So all told, that $700 warranty I figure has netted me somewhere around $4,000 in failed electronics & labor! (this instrument cluster, and previous failed traction computer & yaw sensors)

I'm really beginning to believe there is something to this idea that the Phoenix heat is causing much of these failures, as it's only the electronics that are of any issue.

Well, at the very least, I do know that the heat plays havoc on batteries out there. One of my coworkers lives in Tempe and he had both batteries fail in his Diesel Excursion when it was about a year old and that he replaces them every couple of years normally on most of the other cars he has.

That's just crazy.

Makes me wonder with these 100-102F days we've been having if it will cause me any problems.

I'm still on my factory original battery in my '03 4Runner.

It looks like the new odometer might be more accurate - the old odo (as many on here have reported) underreported by 3%. In checking with a few mileage markers, and in calculating gas at the pump, it looks almost dead on! And, even funnier, it seems to match the trip computer - which many know has been notoriously off (overreports about 7%).

Could it be that this new instrument cluster & circuit board cured the whole computer mileage thing!?

I'm on vacation now, and will double check everything with the GPS on the trip back.
