Tach Failure

Funny thing on the way home tonight - my tachometer just quit working. Everything else works, so I don't think it's a fuse. I haven't been messing under the dash, or anything else. Wonder what it's malfunction is. Any ideas?

rpm sensor on the distributor?

but i'd imagine if that sensor failed you'd be getting a bunch of other malfunction errors because the computer would be all confused..

I'd imagine this is something with the dash cluster itsself.. lose wire, corroded wire... a mouse in the garage eating your wire...

haha :d

Don't these 4Runners have distributorless ignitions??? How could it be a distributor in that case?

I'd guess something going on in the gauge cluster. Maybe look at the service manual and do the electrical troubleshooting steps.

The water temp, tacho, & fuel gauge all have a common fuse, but I guess you would have also noticed these not functioning as well?

Yeah, they all work fine.

that happened to me in my old paseo, it was the tach itself i just flicked it or hit it to make it work:p

Just got back from a trip. When we started, the tach was working again, but didn't seem to be reading high enough. Then it crapped out again. When I shut the engine off, I heard it making a whiring noise a couple times. When I first heard it, I thought a small creature was in my dash!

Guess I'll hafta take 'er in.

Tach Replacement Coming . . . slowly

FYI: Here's the update to this. I took it in & sure enough the tach was bad. The assistant service mgr. said it's the 1st one he's ever seen in 20 years! (Yes, I always believe what dealership people tell me.) So he ordered a replacement.

10 days later I'm still waiting. He said he finally tracked down the issue. The tach comes as a cluster for all the dash instruments. So they have to reprogram the odo to what it had when I 1st took it in. Therefore, I have "free" mileage until the new tach cluster gets installed! The service writer says I should take some real long trips, because they're on Toyota basically - now if I could just get them to pay for the gas! LOL

Entire cluster going out

Just in case anybody is looking at this thread: Now pretty much the entire instrument cluster is going out. Yesterday the fuel & temp gauge started to malfunction. The dealer said this could be expected, since one board controls all of them. The speedo looks OK so far. The new cluster is supposed to be here, and hopefully I can get it in B4 we head on vacation late next week!

You're already out of warranty, right? How much is this going to end up costing you?

Nope! Bought the handy-dandy 100k mile Platinum warranty for $700 from a fellow T4r.org member - fully covered including the rental car!

As many have stated before, the mechanicals are bullet proof - it's the electronics that'll getcha! (I also had the VSC traction control computer replaced at 35k miles - $2,000+)

Kinda scary that you've had all of these issues already on a 3-year-old vehicle. I have a little over 75k miles on my '03 and (knock on wood), it's been perfect.

For what its worth I had a simular problem on a 2002 Highlander, the only thing is mine started with the temp guage and than the fuel guage when the cluster was replaced. It might have gone further like you are experiencing but it was replaced before I could find out. Unlike what your dealer stated it does happen.

I feel its the high outdoor temperature that is killing these computer modules in places like Arizona and other Western desert regions (Hot and Dry). I seem to experience these problem mostly in the summer months. As an example here its been over 100F for several months and I've not seen 20% or high humidity in that time except maybe 2-3 days. It just causes havic on rubber parts and wire insulation becomes brittle and no fans are used for the CPU's.

You may have something there. The two major failures (both electronic) I've had have been in the summer. Also, I do a lot or most of my heavy & longer towing in the hot months. I've taken every step I know how to - tranny coolers, Mobile 1 in everything (even my undershorts), etc. As said, the mechanicals all do fine, but the electronics . . . (So we'll see if anything goes out next summer - fortunately we will still be under warranty.)
