"TACK TACK" sound... Valves?

THere is a loud "TACK TACK TACK" fast sound when the car is running. Coming from the valve cover area it seems.

My dad thinks the valves need to be adjusted.

Any input on maybe what else it could be?

If I need to adjust my valves, any special tools and price ranges for these tools?

Any input would be greatly appreciated

The fuel injectors on the 22RE are some of the noisiest I have ever heard. It's possible you're hearing those or you could have a few loose valves too. I'm running my valves at .008 intake/.010 exhaust which is just a hair tighter than the Toyota recommendation and my engine is quieter than it was when I bought it brand new. The .008/.010 is an engnbldr recommendation and he's been running that on engines for years.

All that's needed to adjust valves is a set of feeler gauges, an 8mm box end wrench and a suitable flathead screwdriver. You'll also need a 19MM socket to turn the engine over at the flywheel. At least that's the size I think it was.

It's a fairly simple job to do as long as you make sure you're adjusting only the valves that are loose at each TDC position. Set the engine to 0 degrees on the crank timing mark and indicator and adjust half of the valves, spin the engine over 180 degrees and do the rest. That's it.

I'll try to dig you up a few links to help...

possibility

I had heard a similar noise that made me think the same thing and it was a loose spark plug. Tightened it up and noise was gone.

Cheapest fix first:)
