I'd say a 5th gen 4Runner if a cherry one is in your budget.
I started off with an '87 4Runner 4x4 (parked - awaiting a full restoration), then went to a '99 Taco 4x4 TRD (just sold it), and now I'm back in a '13 4Runner 4x4.
My dealer loaned me a '12 Tacoma 4-door for approx 5 hours while my 4Runner's paint and leather was being sealed last Friday - I missed my new 4Runner for those 5 Hours!!! I honestly felt the '12 Tacoma had more in common with my old '99 Tacoma than the '13 4Runner (as in, the Tacoma didn't feel as modern or luxurious in the slightest - but it was pretty quick)... I was able to squeak a few sheets of MDF in the Taco's bed, but I agree the Taco's 4-door bed is not a useful advantage compared to a 4Runner's flexible cargo area.
