Toyota Recalling 22,228 Tacoma Pickups

DETROIT - Toyota Motor Co. is recalling 22,228 Tacoma pickups because the parking brake may not work, the automaker and federal safety regulators said Tuesday.



Tacomas from the 2005 model year with automatic transmissions are involved in the recall.


Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the company recalled the vehicles after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (news - web sites) received eight complaints. No injuries have been reported due to the defect, Hanson said.


Toyota said the lock nut on the parking brake cable may not have been properly tightened and can loosen and come off. If that happens, the vehicle could roll if it's stopped on a slope and the transmission isn't in park.


Toyota will notify owners of the recall next month. Dealers will tighten the lock nut for free.

And whos the dumbass that doesn't put an automatic in park when they leave. Can you even do that? I mean, my truck won't let me pull the key out unless the auto is in park (uhhhh, don't ask me how I know... :arrow: )

EDIT: Who are the 8 DUMBASSES....

Speaking of '05 Tacomas.... I saw a blue one with 4Runner Limited rims on it parked at the county courthouse. It had a hoodscoop and a silver skid plate in front.

Is Toyota using 4Runner rims on the Tacoma, or did this guy change out his stock wheels already??

BTW, it looked really good with those wheels... maybe even better than the way they look on a 4Runner.
 
Hm...interesting. I wonder what consumer reports will have to say about this... :o

I believe the Tacoma with the TRD Sport package comes with the 17" 5-spoke wheels from the 4Runner.

Well, CR will black list the Tacoma forever now. Loose bolt, equals zero reliability. :eek:

J/K of course. But seriously, CR jumps on stuff like that because there are so few real problems with todays reliable vehicles. Look at the '03 V6 Fuel Rail recall. It only affect a couple months of trucks, was not a detrimental failure, and was Toyota's recall, not a forced one. Toyota made good on all the repairs, but Consumer Reports gave it a permanent poor reliability rating.

I let my subsciption run out this past year. I can't count how many renew notices they sent me. I only contacted them once to tell them what I thought of their system of ratings. A shame they don't respond.


EDIT: Well I'll be DAMNED!! I just flipped by the website and they have changed the reliability rating of the 03 V6 to above average for the fuel system. Here's the link for any who can use it. The reliabilty verdict is now red checked(recommended), where it used to be a black check (not recommended). Who knows now, maybe they will get even better next year? Poop, the link routes to the user login. Here, I got it to work on my free webhosted page.

I agree, who doesn't put it in park anyways? On that note, a good friend of mine did exactly that (neutral + no e-brake) and his Cavalier nestled nicely into the door of one of my Integras :o Oh well, $1,100 lesson for him lol

And yes, the TRD Sport pack D-Cab Tacomas have the wheels from the Limited 4Runner.....although I believe the 17's from the Sport Edition Runner would look twice as good on the Taco.

As for CR, they're kind of touch and go.....cases like the 03 V6 fuel system really make you wonder, but then somehow many domestics slip through the cracks. Still probably your best bet tho, that Lemonaid guy is even more mad at the world....
 
I don't like the fact that Toyota uses the same wheels on different vehicles...

If I'm not mistaken, certain trim levels of the Sequoia use the same wheels as the Tundra. And now the 4Runner wheels are showing up on the Tacoma??

I can't think of any other manufacturer that does this, can you?

Consumer Reports rated the 03 V6 4Runner as poor because it was a completely new vehicle with no prior record, they review the vehicles over the years and rescore them or improve their ratings depending on how the same model does in the next few years, so Im guessing the V6 4th Gen will have an excellent buy in the next couple years but with only 1 year of info to go on they mark it bad, just look at Jeep Grand Cherokees, 1st year rating they rate them good but they also have bad reliability as they get older so they generally all have black dots to avoid.

It's a weird system that they really need to improve cause while many people follow it like the holy grail, they also tend to piss off readers who own the vehicles that are great but are listed as bad, guess it would cost to much if they actually put reason as to why each vehicle is listed as a bad pick.

I agree. In, say, 2003-2004 (In Canada at least) with certain packages you could wind up with a Sequioa SR5, Tundra TRD Off-Road pack, and Tacoma TRD Off-Road pack with the same wheels....that kinda sucks.

This year, the Tundra got different wheels, but the 4Runner wheels on the Taco bug me too....particularily when the Sport wheels look better in general :(

Solara and Camry SE V6 share wheels, base B-pack Matrix's share with Corolla XR-S's.....stupid, there are more than enough wheel builders/designs out there that it shouldn't be necesary.

To be fair JD Power did give the 4Runner an award for initial production quality - I don't tend to rely on CR for reliability ratings - not since they rated the PT Cruiser as very reliable (my wife has one and it is the worst POS I have ever owned).
