Tacoma whip modification question

I bought my 2001 4Runner with a broken power antenna and have seen the write up about the Tacoma replacement antenna. I have searched the forum for answers to my questions below, but I didn't find them.

I read Bob's article on the antenna replacement, and I thought it was clear until I found another thread on here asking about exactly what parts are needed, which threw in a curve ball. His write up does not answer this that I could find.

My understanding is 86300-35090 includes the sub assembly and some other parts, but NOT the actual antenna mast itself. Is that right?

I want the silver antenna. He wrote that 86309-35100 is for the 97-00, and 86309-32011 is for the 96. Well that's fine and dandy, but I have a 2001.

The other thread made a comment that confused me. I read it as 86300-35090 includes everything and the silver antenna. But I don't think that is right. Can someone confirm?

So what do I need to make this modification? I'm sure I need the 86300-35090 sub assembly, but do I also need 35100 or 32011? If so, which of those two do I get?

I'm guessing that when you refer to the other post asking questions about parts, you're referring to mine.

Here's the deal, yesterday, I went to the stealer, and I asked the parts guy to bring out part #'s 86309-AA042 and 86300-35090. I knew I would pay more there, but I wanted to make sure that I had the right ones, and I wanted to see them in my hand.

Part 86300-35090 is the non-motorized antenna assembly WITH the silver antenna.

Part 86309-AA042 is the black, whip-style antenna.

Now, latter antenna will definitely fit the aforementioned assembly, but when I held both antennae in my hand, I noticed the only differences between the "Taco whip" and the silver one that came with the assembly were the color, and the fact that there appears to be a wire wrapped around the tacoma version. As far as thickness, flexibility, etc., they appeared to be identical.:wtf:

So I left the "whip" antenna, and bought only the antenna assembly with the silver antenna. Went home, installed it all in about an hour and a half, painted the antenna black, an voila, "Taco Whip Mod"! :trophy:

I called around, and this part # was about $55 bucks at all the stealers in the area, and no junk yards had tacomas, tundras, or 4runners. I wanted to be 100% sure about the parts before buying, and I didn't want to have to wait on an order and then risk shipping it back, so I knowingly paid too much at the stealer. I think it's $37 or so online... but then factor in shipping and waiting, so...

Anyway, I would say that you can order part 86300-35090 with 100% confidence. If you want to see this same info written by another user see Ripcord's Build. I also found very useful info/links there on how to combine the two antennae that come in the T4R.

I just got a 2001 and it's got the broken teeth, or it sounds like they're broke. My antenna is "broken" in the up position and I'm getting good reception. Is there a fuse dedicated to the motor or a way I could kill power to the motor only at this point?

(I've been searching and haven't found a way yet, but will keep trying...)

You can unplug the motor wiring harness behind the fender liner, use the same directions as the replacement threads to access it.
 
So my stealership told me that part 86300-35090 was the complete assembly with whip antenna and ordered one in for me to the tune of $65. Turns out on receiving it, it does not include the whip. That's another $42 . . . and we have to order it in. Junkyard or aftermarket next stop.

Where did you go? I have purchased two whips before and both came with the silver antenna. I went to GO Toyota on South Broadway St. in Denver. Just asked the parts guy to open the box before purchase to confirm it was what I wanted.

Yeah, something is wrong there. I bought two assemblies from the dealer too, both came with a silver antenna.

Sounds like the dealer wants to make a "few" extra bucks off you!

I bought the same complete assembly (86300-35090) as some of the other guys on here and it DOES come with the silver mast..
 
Part #86300-35090 same controversy

I just left Camelback Toyota in Phoenix where I picked up my antenna for the Taco whip mod. There was no mast or "whip" included, silver or other. An extra $26 was spent on #86309-0C020 Pole. I have noticed there is no diagram viewable for this, which makes what is included mysterious. Still it will be worth not swapping out the piece... plastic pull cord power mast.
 
If you are searching for a black mast, I found that the Taco mast is the same for the 2008 Sienna. So there must be cross over between different models. Seach ebay for a used one or even take a stroll thru the bone yard. You may get lucky.
 
I bought the same assembly, mine included the silver mast. The dealer didn't give you a complete assembly. I would get them to make it right. I bought a black whip, you can have the silver one from my kit if you cover shipping. Pm me if the dealer does not come through.
 
This may be a stupid question, but....

If the Tacoma Whip Antenna fits in the 4Runner Non-Motorized Assembly, what would prevent me from pulling the antenna assembly from a Tacoma (since I'll be at the junkyard anyway) and using this in my 4Runner? Does it not fit?

apparently 86300-35090 doesnt come with the antenna mast.

ordered from camelback and it came with just the subassembly without packaging in the box. should i complain??
 
I replaced my motorized antenna with the fixed mast a few weeks ago. 86300-35090 ($42.26 from Camelback) is just the base/mount for the antenna. You also have to purchase 86309-0C020 ($26.56 from Camelback, previously 86309-AA042) for the black antenna mast.

I have no idea what the silver version is. If anyone wants a silver version, you can probably look around at other Toyota models, see if any have a fixed, silver mast and try to figure out that part number. The masts seem to be pretty Toyota-versal.

EDIT: It's also worth noting here that the mast comes with a plastic tool/wrench, that is intended to be used for installation/removal of the mast. You can just throw it into your glove box so you can use it whenever you go through a car wash. And then you don't have to worry about finding a wrench that fits.

I was told that the silver antenna no longer comes with the assembly, and the black antenna supersedes the silver one that is no longer available.
 
My motorized antenna recently broke because my wife thought she would do me a favor and get a car wash.. what do you know she left it up and the mast snapped. My question is, If you do this mod and get a standard "fixed" antenna why would you have to take it off before doing a car wash? why is it still vulnerable to snapping?

Is there any antenna mod that performs as your standard typical antenna that you don't have to worry about it breaking?
 
I guess you wouldn't HAVE to take it off. It might be flexible enough to not break in a car wash. I guess you could always try it. I, personally, would rather take the 10 seconds required to remove it. I think the main objective, though, is to prevent the antenna from breaking whenever you're going through trees and brush while offroad.
