Bad pickup sensor more than likely. I'm afraid I do not know.

Sorry, I can't help but read this as Taco Meter. I wish my 4-Runner had a Taco Meter.
 
Taco-meter lol, I was hoping it would be a gauge for the number of tacos under the hood or something

I believe the correct spelling is tachometer

I have no info that will help you with your problem, but by my posting even in jest I did help keep your topic up on the first page which will help in case others that may have helpful info will be able to see/find your topic and reply, many topics quickly go to the 2nd and 3rd page before anyone see them if no one replies to the topics and never gets back in the limelight.

So I would suggest to not get upset if someone replies with non-helpful replies and be glad that more may see your topic/request for help.

Sorry if I offended you, I will not reply again but I would suggest that you may want to "bump" your topic as many times as it takes to keep it up front until someone with the knowledge you seek sees it, it may take a while since the problem you have is not very common with these T4Rs.

Does anyone know how to remove the instrument cluster? From what little info I have found, it could be the stepper motor for the tach itself.

I said I wouldn't post again and I especially won't post a joke or bit of humor to try and brighten your day since you apparently don't have a sense of humor, but this I can help you with, first by simply doing a forum search for "instrument cluster" will bring up numerous related topic/replies, then by perusing the results you can usually find what you seek if it's somewhat a common topic here.

Thanks for the link, already found that one but was hoping to see exactly where to pry so as to not damage the surround. :)

My tach starting reading erratically and stopped working on occasion. I bought the stepper motor but before I got around to installing it it returned to operating normally. That was over a year ago and hasn't skipped a beat since. Maybe the same will happen to yours.
 
Got the circuit board out, looks like I need to order the stepper motor, any suggestions on best place to purchase? Is Tanin auto the only place to buy?
 
Before I replaced my o2 sensors, my tach was all over the place. Since I've replaced them, all is working. Give it a shot if all else fails.
