tad more stock flex... ???

rear shocks and rear springs, need help figuring out what'll give 'little' extra flex/travel... up to 1.5 lift.


ok, I'm looking at minimal lift options to increase flex. I don't want spacers, period.

I don't 'need' a lift for an overland vehicle, I'm planning 33's on stock (ish) suspension, but wouldn't mind some 'extra' travel/flex in 'stockish' height. without excessive rub.

the front will be easy with bilsteins... 1st or 2nd slot on stock springs roughly 1 inch... yes, I'll clean up the front pinch weld... and flares... ect...

the rear has me concerned ??
I'm gonna have a bumper, getting rid of stock bumper and trailer hitch... weight... probably 'close' to the same. but I'll aslo pull a overland trailer.
so 1.5 for the rear?

for flex I can add 2nd gen rear sway bar links to get more travel... they are longer so it can help the flex.

what about springs? what would give a 1-1.5 rear lift in spring?

this should give me some extra tire clearance without making it too tall in COG, 33's have more aggressive tread options... I'm having tire hum withdrawl.

Get whatever springs you want, get whatever tires you want, cycle the suspension, extend your bump stops so you never rub, cycle the suspension again so it's at full bump, measure how long a shock you can fit in there, buy said shock. Boom, you have as much travel as you can possibly get without getting fancy.

You could also do an outer frame shock mount to easily get more travel. Flex is all about having long shocks, and having springs still in contact with the axle at full droop.

This. The suspension geometry will determine the farthest your axle can move, regardless of what spring is in there. As long as your shock length and bump stops allow for full range of motion without dropping out a spring, it doesn't really matter which spring you run.

OP, you might consider airbags if you're just occasionally towing.

And it is a common misconception that a lifted truck will flex more than a stock truck. The stock suspension will flex like the dickens if you are only trying to stuff a 265 tire.
 
The 99 is already lifted an inch. Mine is 21.5" from hub center to fender, stock. You only get to about 22" with 906 from what i've seen.

perfect info, just what I wanted to know... I too just read the 906's give 1.75 lift on 96/97 t4r's... so a tall 99 won't get much more of a lift. should help with towing

the trailer max weight is 2k lbs...

now have to figure out the stock range of a rear shock....
 
4th 5th gen or fj cruiser rear coils will do what you want for the rear. they are 1.5" lift and a higher spring rate than stock so they will carry more weight with less sagging. also if you want more flex either remove the sway bars in front or get quick disconnects. also you can use factory 5th gen rear shocks for more travel, they are 8.5" of travel compared to the stock 7". also make sure to get the tundra 5100s as they also have more travel than the tacoma ones.

with a sway bar disconnect, tundra 5100s and stock coils the front flexes very well, its the setup i use in the front and as you can see in ny sig picture it does OK.
