Tailgate Motor Problem

Replacing it was super easy, however now it doesn't appear to have any power. Anyone know what fuses to check? I checked the tailgate fuse in the interior fuse box and it was fine.

Did you make sure the new motor was plugged in?

unhook the battery and hook it back up and try to reset everything.

Yes, the plug only goes in 1 way, and it is hooked in. It's on the same circuit as the rear dome light, and whenever I plug in the motor the dome light comes on.

I think I ran into that problem as well. Try inserting the key into the rear tailgate and turning the key to activate the rear window up and down and see if that may work. Or try pressing the rear defrost button on the console. I know doing one of those options activate the power back on for the tail lock mechanism.

Can you guys post up where you purchased the motor from. My issue with my 2007 is that it will not open up at all. Did all the reset stuff and still no luck...

There is a pin about 1 inch or so If I recall? that needs to be bent back in place
It can get bent over time from wear and tear and slamming.

Bend it back and away you latch will work.

I will try and send a pic I am in the process of replacing my Regulator.
Tip.. Keep the Rust check to the latch and window regulator if you live in Canada. The 4 mounting bolts on the Window cannot be bought separate you need to buy a window$$ So keep the rust at bay to save in the long run.

Do you have pictures of that pin? Because no body reply to this, hope this could work, I just but my first t4r 3 months ago and I got that probleme with the latch.

I just had the latch assembly replaced for about $400. I was experiencing the same thing, and the mechanic said that the motor had shorted out due to excessive dust. I'm not surprised; the weatherstripping along the rear window frayed long ago, and I often drive dirt roads.

I've got the same problem I think ... living on a dirt road. A lot of grit and grime flies up on the rear window on 4Runners for some reason - it almost seems to be physically impossible for some much dirt to be slung up on the rear of the SUV given the fact that the vehicle is moving forward, but it does, somehow. Design flaw I suppose.

When I got my T4R almost a year ago the first thing I thought about this tailgate motor thing was "that's going to be expensive to replace when it goes". Mine is still OK, but I was wondering if it might be possible to replace it with an old fashioned manual latch if it does die.

My wife's '06 just started this problem a couple days ago. Motor runs, pulls the door shut, but then unlatches. looked up every post, and found all the quick fix ideas, and tried them all, but to no avail. Looks like it's a trip to the Toyota dealer for me. Unfortunately, when I called to schedule an appointment, the Service Manager had no idea what would cause this. That's scary, considering this seems to be a pretty common issue. I'll keep y'all posted.

Motor runs, pulls the door shut, but then unlatches. looked up every post, and found all the quick fix ideas, and tried them all, but to no avail. Looks like it's a trip to the Toyota dealer for me. You can get the part on ebay, save yourself the dealership trip and replace it yourself

I replaced the rear hatch lock assembly in our 2004 4Runner yesterday afternoon. It took about 20 minutes with a fair amount of screwing around. I ordered the part from a seller on ebay, battle garage racing service was the seller brand new oem part. $122 with free delivery. Had it in two days. Easy install. The only question that I have is regarding the emergency release cord. If the door locks in the closed position, how are you supposed to get to the emergency cord to pull it if it is under the plastic lock cover on the bottom of the door. There is a string connected to the release tab. Nit sure where it is supposed to run. If you leave it bundled up at the latch mechanism, you can’t get to it if you really need it. Phil

No, there's a string and also a lever on the inside of the tailgate, if you pop off the little access panel from the inside, you can reach your hand in and access the latch release

Just found this out. Installed the new one on Saturday. Saved myself over $400 from the stealership!
