Tailgate painting

My tailgate is in pretty rough shape. It's rusted through on the top, and a previous owner put a metal strip over the outside edge where the window goes down, but the lack of body underneath is causing the weatherstrip to fail.

I have a spare tailgate, in exactly the wrong color. I can tell my truck was painted at some point, not a great job, but it's a nice metallic finish...

Any thoughts on how much Maaco or someone else might charge to paint the tailgate on all sides to at least a close match? The damage already caused the window mechanism to rust to failure once, I don't want that to happen again.

Hey i manage a collision shop. Not sure what the conversion would be but if the tailgate has no rust or dents. I would quote around 300 inside and out, one colour. If you only want the outside painted it would be probably 200.

Macco would be your cheapest bet. If you dont tell them you want dents or small rust spots fixed they will paint over it. You could have it done there for probbaly 100 bucks.

Are you planning on swapping the guts over yourself or does the new gate have everything in it?

I've already taken all the guts out to fix the rusted out window track and worn regulator in mine, so I'd put it all back in after it was done.

You doing the guts of it will save you money.

Just take the gate to a couple of shops. its good to get a couple
of quotes. then you can compare.
