Taking a Yaris up to Big Bear Mountain?

Hey guys,

I'll be visiting LA in mid-December and my family is getting me a rental car, more than likely a Yaris or something of the sort. My question is, if the roads aren't snowy, can a Yaris or something similar make it up Big Bear Mountain?

The reason for the small car is that i'll be spending a little over a week in LA and as anyone that lives there knows, there's lots of driving to be done. So it's the most economical decision given the gas mileage and rental costs. I'm only going to Big Bear for a day so I dont' see the need to rent an SUV for the trip.

p.s. It's been a while since I've been out there, but they're advertising $30 for snowboard rentals, is that a good price?

A friend of mine took a 1998 Corolla with three others up to a Lake Tahoe resort I frequent, about 6000' ft above sea level. I would guess it would be ok or squeaking by.

$30 for equipment rental seems pretty good, my resort charges $45/day.

If I were you I would get a cheap set of chains from Walmart, as they require chains if the roads are even a tiny bit icy. Then you can just return them if you don't need them. Better safe than sorry. I've done this for several seasons and have never had to use the chains, but I feel more comfortable knowing I have them. $30 is pretty standard.
