H1 hummers that is. Anyone here know anything about them? How much used ones are, reliability issues, etc.

I don't know too much about them, but i would give my left nut (now that i have 2 kids) for a 2006 H1 Alpha! Hell, both nuts can go for the Alpha!

If you get one look for a gasser. The 6.5L powered ones are less desirable. The diesel is marginally ok. The real problem is due military ops replacement engines are in very high demand and there's 2 kinds of 6.5's; those that have just been replaced and those that are about to be replaced:bash: Replacement cost for the engines is very high...

The reason I know this is a buddy has a '99 Suburbun and he just went through this...

2006 H1s come with the Duramax diesel that is found in Chevy HD trucks...AWESOME engine!! It is light years ahead of the diesel that you are talking about.

A few things:

- Not all H1 comes with lockers. So, if you want to go off-road, then make sure that you get one with the optional lockers.

- If you are really interested in off-roading and buying the ultimate off-road vehicle, then i recommend getting a Jeep Rubicon. Why? Parts are infinitely cheaper. Body damage is infinitely cheaper to repair. (Trust me, i know firsthand with my Mercedes G...it is prohibitively expensive to off-road!) Rubi is infinitely smaller...H1 is just too wide for more North American trails. If you're buying it for the mystic, then i totally agree with you...nothing beats an H1!

- As Chris stated above, H1 (beore 2006) engine is NOT it's strong point...so, i would get a 2006 model if possible. The fact that it shares it's powertrain with the Chevy makes it more desirable in terms of future servicing and parts.

I was thinking about replacing my Runner with a H1. What man does not want one? I kind of got over it. I don't wheel that much and it would be way overkill as a comuter. You would also have to have room to park the 8foot 6 inch wide beast. Great as a 2nd car if you can swing it. If you make less than 60k a year and it was your only car it would be a stretch with upkeep and fuel. You can get a 98-01 for under 40K. Check out e-bay to get an idea of the price point. Or usedh1.com. I like the 2 door pu.

I drive by the Hummer plant in Mishiwaka, Indiana all the time. Can you go to the plant to get those military engines? They make all the models there. They have buildings labeled H2, H1 and Hummer military. I like the military ones rolling out of the plant with the gun pods on top.

I've never seen that plant what highway is it off of. I go by Mishawaka a few times during the summer and go to TireRack as well but I've never seen the Hmv plant

It's on both Jefferson and McKinley HWY between Bittersweet and 331(capital Ave.). Keep going east past tirerack to the Mishawaka exit(83 I think). Go south on Capital, then turn left on Mckinley HWY. It's 1/2 mile down the road on the right hand side.

But I think I know what you're getting at.

I've seen photos of the inside of the H1, and even though the vehicle is very wide the two actual front seats are very narrow.

Yep, extremely cramped despite the exterior appearance. The military specs have a little more room so if I ever win the powerball and buy one for the hell of it, it will be an ex-military one.

I owned an H3 Alpha for a while, less than a year. Capable off-road machine, but it yielded dismal mpg (less than 17 mpg highway) and it's FT4WD (AWD) doesn't seem to function as well as the one in my 4Runner.

The ride was rough, seats were uncomfortable...there were a lot of strikes against it. The only saving grace was the noticable torque and HP of the 5.3L V8. I fully DO NOT understand why anyone would have ever bought a 3.5L (pre '07) or 3.7L version of that vehicle. My Colorado (2006 crew cab) had the same 3.5L L5 in it - and shares the GMT355 base platform with the H3 - and it rode only mildly better - and was way underpowred. No biggie until you figure that the Colorado weighed 600# less, at least, than the 5000lb H3. 100 yds from the Toyota dealership on my test drive and I was 110% happier with the T4R ride, power and smoothness than either the H3 Alpha or Colorado CC Z71 (my last 2 vehicles prior to the T4R I just bought).

I'm with the other poster, all things being equal, if I ever lose my mind enough to own another Hummer, it'll be a government clearance H1 mil-spec model.

Fellas, from what I understand the US government does NOT sell military surplus vehicles to the civilians.

Maybe Thai or someone else can explain the reason behind that.
