Tansmission Drain and Refill Question

I decided that I should do a drain and refill on my 04 2wd V6 4Runner, non sealed transmission. After reading some of the other threads, I decided I would do a drain and refill.After all, she's at 113K miles. I expected to drain a couple of quarts, refill and then repeat a couple more times over a two or three months.

When I pulled the drain plug, I drained about 5.5 quarts of fluid......not what I was expecting. I replaced with the same amount of Toyota ATF transmission fluid. Checked the tranny dipstick and level looks good.

I am concerned after reading other threads that I should not have had so much drain out.I'm hoping I didn't screw somthing up. I'm no professional mechanic, but I know I was draining the transmission. The fluid was red, bbut noe cherry red like the new, so I'm sure it was transmission fluid I drained.

I'm concerned because I was only expecting a couple of quarts. Any thoughts,suggestions or expalnations ?:help:

I believe Toyota says 3.2 quarts for a drain and refill. 11.2 qts for a dry fill. I've seen stranger things so if 5.5qts works then run it. Are you checking the fluid hot? ATF expands when hot.

your number is about the same as mine, i drained it again a week later. i drained the oil in an empty oil pan, then used a milk jug to measure the amount, it's about 5 qts. dealer flush on a machine hookup uses 18 qts. always do it when the transmission is hot.

Thanks for the replies....I have been checking the dip stick, hot and cold, and everything looks good. I did the drain while the engine was warm, not hot.

I have since read there's an overflow plug in the pan itself....I seem to recall this is to drain the fluid down to the correct level, but should be done when the tranny is hot. I'll keep an eye on the level next few days. My main concern is not causing any problems due to over / under filling. But given that you guys have had similar results with the amounts you drained, I'm not so worried anymore. Thank god for this forum...I learn so much here.

If it drives the same or better I'd say your fine. Trannys dont like it when they are low or high on fluid and I'd think you'd know.

Good, keep checking on it for the next couple hundred miles to ensure all is well.
