TB price joke

well dont know if joke....this summer I should put on a timing belt kit, but my summer is getting way booked already, but prob find time and will do myself.
But I thought I would call around yesterday to shops that "specialize" in toyota and get some prices.

1st shop said they only use Asin parts for this job, not including any seals ( cam and crank, if needed extra time and labor) they want 1400 ( does include all rollers, tensioners, water pump, thermostat, drive belts). half day job, get back same day. I asked if I brought in my oil cooler hoses and gaskets can they do that as well....nope we wont install any owner supplied parts.

2nd shop. ( the joke shop)...well those older 4runners can be tricky that job goes anywhere from 950 to 2000 depending on whats needed....I ask do you use Asin parts, he said maybe... we use whatever orielleys or autozone has in stock and you will have to leave it for 2 days.

guess I will just add to my summer projects.

1400 with all OEM parts is fair.

You'll see once you will have bought the kit and done it yourself and count the hours you put in honnestly. They also sell the parts at a profit so don't forget that.

I wouldn't trust a shop, I don't know do the job for any amount of money. I've had the TB done at the dealer once or twice in the past and had a friend of mine who is Subaru tech do it once. I have another car so I do it in a couple of days like tear down one evening and putting it back together the next. It's pretty straight forward.

Two years ago I think I payed ~300 for the parts, altogether I ended up at $700 for labor plus a few brake lines fixed, so about $1,000 for it all

Damn, that's about $150/hour shop rate. I've been out of touch with shop rates for awhile, but a decade ago even high end places (think Porsche) were the only ones above $100/hour, and even they were just barely over $100/hour. Guess I let my Brother-in-Law off easy with $50/hour.... won't do that again.

I agree that absolutely no one else will *EVER* take the same care with your vehicle as you will.

If you buy parts yourself from Air Cabin Man its 330.

I would think a quality shop will charge you 700-ish if you bring your own parts.

So seems like your price is high...

The GM dealership I work at is $150/hr

In case people are curious, ProDemand/Mitchell put the timing belt, tensioner, idler, and water pump at 4.7 hours labor.

5 hours. I must be slow. I can't do that all in 5 hours. Granted, I mostly fight the rusted bolts though...:)

I have changed 3 timing belts using the aircabin kits.

Rust makes things exponentially harder! I always thought that the labor guides should allow for additional time for corroded fasteners, but unfortunately it does not so the extended warranty companies won't cover that either.

2nd shop doesn't care about your vehicle. If my brain serves me correctly, I think it took 5 hours to knock out mine since it was rust free (TB never been messed with until I replaced it). I'm just glad I knocked out mine. Inflation has been a mess lately.

well....first... up here in the wilderness...labor prices are nuts..regardless of our current economy....gonna order the kit from aircabin man on ebay and do myself....just need good weather or borrow someones garage

Crank bolt

I know Yota says bolt is one time use, experience says otherwise 3 TB changes same bolt on 96Red, difference I torqued bolt. 01 Runner I now have someone else did 1st TB change, it got new bolt.

I recommend you have a tap kit on hand just in case you need to chase both threads on the crankshaft puller threads due to rust when you attempt to remove the pulley itself. I think both of mine were M8x1.25 threads. My bolts wouldn't have threaded in w/o the specific tap to chase them first.

Purchased parts as part of a kit for $225.30. Then I had my trusted shop install everything for $404.82 about 3.5 years ago, as I didn't have a garage at the time and wasn't about to run into issues, leaving it outside in a parking spot.
