With the part-time 4wd/KDSS system, are there any preferred settings when in mountain snow conditions?
TE traction settings in snow?

I got the sense that the other thread was focussing on the full-time 4wd, but maybe not. Also, I lumped all the techie gizzies in one, but should have stated " are there reasons to engage one of the " Multi-terrain Select" modes in snow conditions.
Anyway, being somewhat lazy, I was looking for a TE owner that has a lot of experience in snow and could articulate his/her setup in those conditions.

Sorry I could not help i have a TE but have not driven in snow yet.

Multiple terrain select is really only valid in 4 low, except for sand/mud (or something).
I've found that 2wd and just relying on theVSC has been pretty good. I don't drive the 4R like the STi so I haven't really needed 4 wheel in the snow, except where it is deep.
I'd say if you were driving through a long distance, or deep (>2 feet) of snow, 4wd with VSC and TRAC off would be your best bet.

I wouldn't say I have "a lot" of experience, but 4Hi worked fine for me on snowy highways, yet I also managed to get myself stuck driving in fresh snow that was covering some nasty packed snow and frozen ruts. 4Lo with the rear locked was the only thing that allowed me to keep from getting stuck again on the way out as negotiated a path around the other stuck vehicles.

For the record, I have the stock TE Dunflops, which actually did fine on 4" of fresh on pavement earlier this year, but heading into CO, so I'm questioning their ability.
What tires would be signicantly better in snow? I like the looks of Michelin-LTX® A/T2, but Costco (my fav) only has them in the 10 ply rating on this model. I do a lot of hiway driving, so can't have too much aggression!

like a few other folks on here, i'm running Goodyear Duratracs (which bear the snowflake emblem). we just got our first "blizzard" this week and the tires more than lived up to my expectations. the only time i even bothered to put it in 4H was when i stuck it in a few feet of plowed snow so that i could park just off the road; it trundled right out no problem.
I'm running Goodyear Duratracs with studs in the winter, but I would also recommend what I run the other 3 seasons which is the BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA KOs. Very quiet, smooth, proven and 3 ply sidewalls as well. They are 'snowflake' symbol rated so are considered a 'winter traction tire' here in Oregon. I have used them in snow many times over the years on several different vehicles and they are excellent in the snow. But in our very water content dense "Cascade Cement" snow we get here in Oregon, the roads turn to ice quite frequently after being driven on and there is no substiute for the metal studs when the weather is serious crossing the Cascade mountains on our way to our cabin in central Oregon. Or here in Portland for that matter when it does snow.

Not knocking your info , but I thought mine did. Its the knob on the right and has like 5 different settings. I never used it or the other knob on the left. Have not had time to read up on it yet.

Crawl Control on the left, Multi-Terrain Select on the right. KDSS has no switches, buttons, or controls available.

I've done a lot of driving in snow/ice over the past few weeks and 150 miles of it a couple of days ago between Bishop CA and Reno, NV.
I keep it in 2wd most of the time. When traction control kicks in for a moment it's a reminder to slow down. If it's a lot more than that then it's time to put in 4H. BTW, I only used 4H when I pulled off the road for a break.
I also used a lot of gadgets over the past week in steep, rutted, muddy trails.
ATRAC is awesome. It will get you out of some bad situations with very little slipping.
Crawl control will take you confidently up or down a slippery, off camber, hill when you can't afford to side slip.
MTS is hard for me to figue out. IIRC it only adjusts the settings for traction control and ABS(?) based on terrain. More slip for sand less for rock or vis versa?

Guys thanks for the heads up on KDSS always being activated. Was not sure at that time.
As for winter driving IN SNOW ON ROADS. we basically dont have options on the TE (not sure about other packages). If the roads are snow covered or driving in deep snow . Just use 4hi . The VSC/Trac & Atrac cannot be disengaged in 4hi. VCS/TRAC can but only up to 30mph then it automatically kicks back on .
I have mixed emotions on the 4x4 system. I still do not know what the 2 big top knobs do exactly and why you would use them , but I will keep playing with them off road.
