Tell me about my 4Runner

Well due to a recent addition to our family, it was time to get rid of the 2 door civic I was driving and get into something more ..."family oriented." I have wanted a Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner for a long time so I saw this as a pretty good chance. After selling my civic and looking around on AutoTrader I purchased a 1998 Limited with the Rear locker and 92,000 miles on it. Overall, this vehicle is in incredibly good shape and was too good of a deal to pass up, even though I wanted the SR5 more.

I have always liked 4Runners but I do not really know too much about them. Any hints or tips that anyone has learned while modding theirs would be useful here.

This weekend I want to install my alpine cd player and Polk momo 6.5's in the doors. For the dash kit, do you guys use the metra kit?? Or is there an OEM option? Also, does anyone have any experience with the adapters for the speakers off of ebay?? Also has anyone had any problems with getting MOMO's to fit in the doors? (I know with my civic there was a lot of modifications I had to do to the panels to make this work.)

Again, I am just looking for advice here or things to look our for along the way. Also just wanted to introduce myself as I will probably be on this forum quite a bit.

as far as audio goes..

you dont need a dash kit, just a metra toyota pocket (if the radio does not have that empy "compartment" under it already) and the radio gets "iso" mounted (meaning it uses the factory brackets)

The momos fit..but working with the speaker pod is a PITA you need to do some trimming of the back of pod, and the inner sides..

I made all new PODS out of MDF and it works great..if you need any details or instructions on it, just ask..

Are the badges on these just held on by adhesive or do they have the little pegs too? I am particularly interested in removing the "limited" badges off of the c pillars.

if you look up "de-badging" you will get a ton of info on it..its been brought up, alot..

Mine were simple to remove..i was able to actually just tug mine off..and goo-gone the hell out of it...

How many of you did any sound dampning to your doors before installing your speakers?

I was told at secondskin forums to get some trunk damplifier as well as 2 sheets of overkill and a speaker kit to make the speakers sound better.

dynamat (or similar noise dampener ) makes a huge difference..It decreases road noise, improves frequency response, and helps keep out rattles..

To do a 4DR sedan covering (twice) the trunk, and two side doors (driver and passenger) takes appx three bulk packs from dynamat (36 sq.ft. each) so whatever product you decide to get, if you get appx 108 sq.ft. of deadener..

If you want to do a single layer, obviously, half will suffice..(appx 54 sq.ft.)

i would reccomend picking up three trunk kits at a local car-audio shop if you cant find a dealer that sells bulk-packs.

Putting something simple as clear corner and clear bumper lights, makes your 4runner look cool

I bought clear corners on ebay yesterday and I am going to buy the bumper lenses after I finish installing my alpine. I had to buy the Toyota pocket and a wiring harness, so I'm trying to limit my spending since I just bought the thing last week and have only had it one day. Thanks for the input so far.

On my '02 SE, the rear door OEM speakers were 4.25" and the fronts were 6.5". I replaced mine w/ JBL 5.25" in the rears and 6.5" in the fronts. I purchased my rear adapters and spacers here:

As far as the emblems, I replaced all my silver ones with Toyota Black Pearl Emblems. The only 2 that had pegs, were the front & rear toyota logos. The remaining emblems were all held on w/ glue.

A good trick to removing emblems is to use "Goo Gone" and fishing line. The fishing line takes the emblems off and the goo gone gets the glue off the body.

About the audio ...Right now my stock cd player skips over every single tiny bump and both of my door panels seem to have a rattle (that or the speakers are shot, haven't done much investigating). Is it common for the 3rd gen door panels to rattle with the speakers? I listen to my metal pretty loud and can't be having rattles.

I'll get some more pics up soon. I am finding out that there is pretty much nowhere in this hell-hole town to go wheelin. Oh well.

Well, I went out today attempting to find a trail or something ....I found an excellent place to fish but thats it. I snapped a quick picture before I left and thought it came out pretty good.
