Temp Gauge Not Working

Just as the title suggests, the temp gauge isn't working. I've read on some of the posts that it could be the ECT sender and that the wire could be just disconnected and is a PITA to get to.

I just recently had the valve cover gaskets replaced and after getting it back and driving it, I noticed that the temp gauge isn't working. When I advised the mechanic that my temp gauge wasn't working, he said that he noticed that temp gauge wasn't working when he drove it inside his bay. My question is can the wiring come loose by changing out the valve cover gaskets and he didn't realize it and now when asked about it, he's trying to cover up and charge me extra to work on my vehicle to fix that problem?

Yes check the connector behind the valve cover and next to the heater/coolant hose. Its a small plastic connector.

You have to know this is hard connector to get to with the engine all put back together. The same thing happened to me when I did the valve cover gasket job on my 98 3rd Gen. When you're pulling up on the main wiring loom, it can dislodge that temp gauge connector like you've found out.

The connector is a simple slide on connector that goes over a metal post on the temp gauge sending unit. A telescoping mirror will help you spot the location where you have to get your hand into to reattach the connector. If you don't have a mirror, reach under the main wiring loom near the center point of the engine against the fire wall. I think I remember it's a little closer to the passenger side. If you're lucky, you'll feel the loose wire and be able to get it back onto the sending unit post by feel. It's a test of patience but you'll get it.

The mechanic asking for more money to fix this issue is BS. When you fix it yourself, let the mechanic know where the connector is and how you fixed it and then tell him he lost your business because you don't want to bring your vehicle to a dishonest mechanic.
