Temperature Gauge fluctuation

Hi guys, I am new to the forum. I've used the search function and found a couple of threads that had problems dealing with the temperature gauge fluctuating but none of them seemed to be the same problem as mine.

A little information on my 4runner, It's a 2000 Limited RWD with a little over 193k on the engine. Recently I've noticed that when i am parked or idle, the temperature gauge on the dash would shoot up, quite fast I might add, it would hit the red and would stay there. When I drive and the vehicle is moving it would lower back down to normal temperature.

Is there anyone here with any information as to what the problem could be? Any information is appreciated!

Could be a bad fan clutch, clogged radiator, maybe a bad water pump , maybe thermostat. Hope this will point you in the right direction.

If your fan is working properly and there is no sign of leaking or fluid contamination, then take it to a Jiffy-Lube or somewhere similar to have a coolant flush.
When you warm it up, the temp should climb and then fall to a normal range indicating that the thermostat is functioning

Thanks for the info! I'll start with the simplest of stuff, flushing the radiator and proceed from there if that doesn't work.

Agreed. I'd check the fan clutch first since that sounds most likely (not moving enough air at idle).

My sc did this with a leaking head gasket although start with the cheap stuff first

spin the fan with the truck off...if it moves easy its a bad fan clutch..you should have quite a bit of resistance on that fan
