Just took the family down the Tennessee Dirt Devil yesterday. It's basically a trail of barely maintained, single lane, dirt roads that crosses creeks and streams, winding through the hills of rural Tennessee near Leiper's Fork. It's nothing very technical, but it's a good place to go to run the 4WD. The kids loved sitting in the back with the rear window rolled down while we crossed the water. I lost count how many times we crossed a stream or creek on the trail. The deepest it got was probably 7" or so. Beautiful scenery all around. Expect to back up for oncoming traffic (trucks and/or horse-drawn carriages).
Something to keep in mind if you drive this trail: These are PUBLIC roads through PRIVATE land. There are loads of "No Trespassing", "Private Property", and "Keep Out" signs that you would do well to pay attention to. I have read of more than a few complaints from locals about Jeep and ATV drivers trespassing and tearing up their property, even going as far as to cut their way through fences. Tread lightly, and stay on the path.
One more thing to note: for at least 80-90% of the trail, I had zero cell service, and I'm on Verizon.
Notice the "I'd turn back if I were you" sign on the right:
One thing about middle TN–we're on the very edge of the Central Time Zone, which means it gets dark around 5pm this time of year. When you're following a creek that winds its way between tall hills, it's effectively dark even earlier. I filled the tank in Leiper's Fork before hitting the trail. Yes, that says 18.1mpg. :rockon:
