Tensioner / Pulley belt problem 03 Runner

Hey Guys,

Still fighting this one. I've read on other posts regarding the annoying squeaking "cricket" like noise on startup in the morning. The dealer has replaced the belts but the noise returned 2 weeks later.

Someone on other posts mentioned that the bolt that holds the pulley is too short which makes the pulley slip then when it heats up it becomes the right size.

Does anyone else have this problem or has had it fixed? I hate going to the dealer and have it looked at it again if they don't even know what it is.

Please advise.

Yes, I have the same problem on mine. I too have had my belt replaced. It's been about 2 weeks since the replacement belt was installed and so far no high squeaking "cricket" like noise. The dealer said that my original belt had "feathered edges" and needed to be replaced. I can't believe that I already need a replacement belt at 4500 miles.

I hope the sound doesn't come back but I'll keep my ears open for it since I'm at the 2 week mark since the replacement.

If the sound does come back, I would definitely go back and have them time/date stamp the same problem into their records. At least that way you'll have a running history on file that might help any unforseen problems (related to this) in the future. I believe there are laws that helps protect us on problems that re-occur within a short amount of time.

Mine starting squeaking again after the 2 week mark.

Anyway Toyota Corp did call me this morning and they said that they know about this issue on the V6. They will be coming out with a TSB when they find a fix.

Either way let me know if yours does start sqeaking again.

For those of you that are having problems with there V6 4 Runners (03 )
I think it is time for everyone to start to make waves on this issue. Call Debra Simons @ Toyota Custer Relations Sec @410-760-1500.. It's time that she starts to get calls maybe we can waste her time like toyota wastes ours. Toyota thinks this is a joke! They know about the problem and keep playing the game LEMON LAW!!!!!!!

I agree. Any owner with this problem should continue to call until Toyota gets the message. But if you don't call, they will think it is a very isolated problem.

FYI,
If this belt breaks while you are driving PARK THE TRUCK. This is a drive belt. If it is making noise there is a good shot that it can break, that's why it's making the noise in the first place.
 
I'm having the problem again! Started to show up last week and this morning it was getting worse. Of course by the time I got to the dealer it was all quiet. They've got the car right now!
 
Good News...Problem fixed with a TSB

Less than a month ago, I brought my 4Runner in for that annoying and embarrassing squeal sound. They replaced the serpentine belt due to feathered edges, but the problem came back about 3 weeks later - very faint at first and a few days later more pronounced and lasting a little longer. I've seen this trend before and so has a few of us here. A few days ago I brought my 4Runner in again. The dealer tech called the tech line and spoke to a rep. who in turn notified the San Francisco Region of Customers Complaint. I was quite impressed that this dealer opened a case for me in my name with Toyota. Today, the dealer received and installed a new V-RI tensioner assy, V-ribbed belt, and bolt flange as per TSB EG012-03. According to my service adviser, this TSB addresses alignment issues with the belt and tensioner. This misalignment may explain how the belt got the feathered edges prior to the first attempt to fix the problem. I am hoping this fixes it for good. Hope this info helps some of you guys that have exhibited this problem.

Belt/Pulley Problem

Have same problem with new 4Runner. Only 300 miles. Loud chirping sound every morning when engine is cold. Disappears when engine warms up and reappears again after cool down. Spoke with toyota at 800# on 7/3/03. TSB on problem just released. Waiting for my delaer to contact me otherwise I will continue to go through corporate Toyota until problem has been resolved. They have been helpful, courteous on the phone. My local dealer has not been so. Good luck to all of us with this problem.
 
I also have same problem with new 2003 4Runner V6 4WD. Only 1000 miles. Loud chirping sound every morning when engine is cold. TSB on problem just released. My dealer to contact me when replacement parts arrive for the tensioner, belt, etc.

Has anyone had these parts replaced successfully without problem re-occuring?
 
TSB Works

I expierenced the same problem with new 4runner almost from day one. TSB fix was just published at the time in 7/03. It's a relatively easy fix and service dept did it right the first time. No problems since. I was concerned at the time that repair would not be so simple. I was wrong. Have been very happy with truck since. Good luck. Your repair shouldn't be a problem if they follow TSB.
