Tentioner/ Lemon Law

For those of you that have a V6 4 Runner (2003) I have had problems from day one with this truck, from rattles in the rear the problems with drive belts. After talking with Sharon in Customer Service for Toyota North America I have decided to file un Marylands Lemon Law. It's a real shame that after owning BMW's
and Mercedes for years and always have good relations with the factory I have the deal with this CRAP with Toyota. Case number is ( 200304160005) if toyota is reading this, but I dought it or if they care. At first I was going to ask for a replacement truck now I don't think so. I have spoke with other dealers it seems they no about this belt problem but have no idea on how to fix. As far as the rattles the truck sounds like it's 10 years old. Back the german for me! :mad:

Wreck, good luck...it is unfortunate to hear such a bad experience with one of the most reliable SUVs on the planet! :( Hopefully, this is an isolated incident...not a recurrent theme with '03 models.

Keep us posted on your developments.
 
By noise do you mean a squeaking sounds when its first started then once it warms up it goes away? Mine does that now and I thought it might be a break in issue but I mentioned it to the service rep anyway for this Friday's (5/16) maintenance.

(I'll update my other thread once I get the truck back)

I'll mention this problem (tension belt) to him then but I'd like more info on it; ie. what it does, where it is, etc.

This is a bearing noice when you first start it in the morning after sitting.Toyota knows about this problem but has not come out with a fix. They replaced a belt, then a tentioner and it still makes the noice. This is a problem because it is a tentioner running dry, a drive belt could break . Then you park it and what. Plus a have a LOT of rattles in the rear. They have replaced the set belts but no luck.

I hope everything turns out okay... :( But I do sincerely doubt Toyota will do anything about it.

It's just one of those 1st year flaws... But I'm pretty sure its an isolated case... just sux that it had to be one of our own members though...

That's what is nice about Md. We have a good Lemon Law. As we speak the letter has been sent in to Toyota. I was a new car dealer ( Partner) for 20 years. I don't lose Lemon Law cases. If toyota fights you in Md and you can prove bad faith it will really cost them. It's a shame we have to go though this but this truck will go back if they don't fix it next time in. Either way I have another 13 months left to file. I am sure the problem will come back. I wonder how Toyota will feel If I drive around with a big Lemon the the side of the truck. That happened to me in the 80's and it made the local paper...
 
Toyota is addressing this problem. They are switching to a different belt maker. Its only happening on some of the v6 runners. Im sure they will replace the belt if you take it into the dealer.

Allready had the tentioner and Belt replaced with the New Belt. Still no fix.I guess they won't have to deal with the Limited V6 anymore they are getting rid of the V6 option in this truck . Only V8. Wnder what will happen to resale. DOWN. Glad I filed for Lemon Law. First they can out with a Limited Look Alike option and now no V6.. Never again.:50cal:
 
I'm having the same problems too.

I've got that high pitched squeaking sound coming from the belt area. It started very suttle at first. Went away after a few minutes of driving. Now a few weeks later, it does it all the time (in the morning and during the drive to work). It's really embarrasing! The dealer is ordering a new belt, but from this tread it doesn't sound like it's going to fix it!

I don't know if this is related but I'm having a similar intermittent problem on my '03 V6 (8K miles). Either way I'll start another thread.

At times the belt(s) make a squeaking noise when I start up in the morning. It is very noticeable in the garage (due to smaller area I suppose) versus outside. By the time I arrive at work (20 miles) I can't hear the noise any longer.

It seems as it does this for 3-4 days then goes away for a few weeks then returns a few weeks later. At first I suspected it had something to do with parking it in the garage after driving it in the rain. It seems to happen the morning following a rain, maybe just a coincidence or I'm crazy. Don't know. It doesn't happen everytime it rains. Anyone else have this problem.

Anyways, the dealer told me to bring it by the next time it makes the noise. We'll see what happens.

It doesn't seem as major as wreck1111. At least, not yet.
