Hi, i am looking into getting a tent that attaches to the back half of the 4runner. Does anybody have this? Do they like it? Any good brands or brands i should stay away from? Just looking for some details, i am a big camper and that this would be a great idea!

The roof top tents are great, if you want to spend that much. They will be much more expensive than a tent that attaches to the rear of the Runner though like what you originally asked about. You could easily spend $800-$3000 depending on brand and size which of course usually has most to do with quality of materials, and options included like awnings and large rainflys..etc.
I have one that I got for a great price about 3 years ago because they were blowing out the old model to release the new. It's on the less expensive/lower grade end of the scale vs. others out there, but it has worked great for me.
Obviously, you have to think about tent size based on your family. If you have a large family that all go camping together, don't expect to get everyone in that roof top tent. You can find RTT's that could sleep two adults plus possibly two small kids, but that's about the limit...and RTT's that size will be on the upper end of the pricing scale. If you want a larger tent for the whole family to stay in, you may be better off just going with the SUV tent.

I agree 100%. Roof tents look like a PIA to me.

From the point that I remove the protective cover on my RTT, to fold it out, extend the ladder, and cinch down the two straps inside to tighten the tent up....we're talking 3-5 minutes. Takes only a little longer (couple additional minutes) to get it all stowed when you break camp...just due to the fact that you have to tuck all the sides in once it's folded so you can get the cover back on.
The biggest downside to the RTT, is that if you want to wheel while you're out camping...your tent is on your rig. Not only do you have to fold and stow it to drive the truck...but it gives you a bit higher CG while wheeling. This is why I've drawn out a design in CAD for a camp trailer...that will hold the RTT on it instead of the truck
I live in MO and half the time when I camp it rains. I hate to put away a wet tent. If it is wet and raining when I have to leave I can always go home and set a ground tent up in my garage and wait for it to dry before I put it away. With a roof top tent it seems like that would be more of a pain in the butt.
I don’t tent camp any more I take a trailer, I was thinking about a pop up but was worried about putting it away was wet and it getting moldy. Same would be true for any tent I couldn’t set up in my garage so it could dry before it was stored.
When my boys get older we will tent camp again. I like to keep it simple. A ground tent is a better option for me. You can get a cot to keep you off the ground.

Yeah, it kinda depends on what space you have available at home. I have access to my backyard that's plenty large enough to pull the truck into and unfold the tent to let it dry out. I use this rigged up "ratcheting rope hold down hanging system thing-a-majig" to pull the tent off the roof of the truck and it hangs there till I need it again. Just pull up under it and lower it onto the rack.
It's kinda a pain in the butt to mount and dismount it with just one person...but again, that's why I want to build a trailer for it.

Several cheap suv tents on here, I have no idea about the quality, but for 2-3 hundred, I'll buy a new one every year or two if needed! The roof top tents have some advantages, but I think for many people it is too big of an expense, and PITA with not being able to leave it to drive around etc. Plus I'm 90% sure I'd fall out in my sleep!

I live on 24 acres, I have the space. I just want to get home, unpack and deal with it then and there. I don't want to sit and wait for the weather to clear. In MO the weather can change about every 15 minutes.
Hey guys, I have a distribution account and am planning on buying a few directly from the Chinese manufacturer. The only thing is, my purchase will be for hardtop, not soft-top tents. Happy to include others in the purchase. We can choose any combination of Black, White, or Silver fiberglass with Green, Grey or Taupe canvass. Same product as all the American distributors of hardtop tents, but much, much, less expensive.
About $850+shipping...If we can get the order over 15, probably 20% cheaper. Lemme know. I'm going to post this a few places before I order.

Hardshell - take a look at the link. It's the exact same tent. But I need to point out that international shipping and port, duty and taxes about double the price from $850 to $1600-$1700.
