Terra Grappler G2 Advantages

Ive got a 2017 TRD Off Road and am replacing the wheels with the black TRD Pro wheels just because I like the look. Debating whether to also change to the Terra Grappler G2 tires that come on the Pro. I'm new to 4 wheeling, can someone enlighten me to the advantage of the Grappler tire over the stock tire. Is it grip, puncture resistance, less chance of rim damage, etc.

What is the OEM tire on the TRD Off Road? If it's the highway tread tire then the Terra Grapplers will be massively better off road.

I thought the TRD Off Road was a direct re-name of the Trail... If so does it still have the 17x7.5" wheels? If you plan on doing lots of off-roading the 7.5" wide wheels allow for a much wider range of tire sizes over the 7" Pro wheels.

You should check out FN's F(x) Pro wheels. Look all-but-identical to the OEM TRD Pro wheels but are 8" wide. They aren't listed on the web-site (can't keep them in stock). You have to call and ask.

Terra Grappler is one of many all-terrain tires. There's a billion different tires ranging from very street oriented like the dunlops to very offroad oriented like Interco's tires and everything in between. You just need to decide what's best for you. Mileage and low noise on one end and durability and offroad traction on the other. On a scale of 1-10 with the Dunlops as a 1 and an extreme offroad tire as a 10, the Terra Grapplers are about a 3.

If you're sticking with a stock size - I don't see any significant reason to choose them over any other all terrain tire. I would personally probably buy something else. Like a BFG KO2 or a Goodyear AT/S.
 
There was a sticky thread a while back where a guy did the TransAmerica Trail with Terra Grapplers and had several punctures. They'll give you better grip than the stock Dunlop AT20, and maybe slightly better puncture resistance, but not significantly enough. They definitely look better though. To truly increase puncture resistance, you'd have to go to a light truck E rated tire, but that comes at the expense of a significant weight increase.

I second this... they look more aggressive than they perform. I ditched mine after about 15k miles. Wasn't very impressed with them in wet conditions, and at some point a chunk of the sidewall got sliced off. If you're going to swap out the stock tires anyways, I think you should look at some other options depending on what you need. I went with E rated Cooper St Maxx 255/80r17 and they have been awesome, would highly recommend them if you need something that can handle a lot of abuse.
 
What's your normal driving? Lots of highway miles? Lots of city/short mile stuff? So many ways to go with the info/question. I swapped to them because I do a ton of highway driving... and they are still rather quiet for an AT tire. Also, not much rain where I live, so wet traction is not a big issue. Are you planning on sticking with P rating? Or moving to C or E? Those answers would help move you in a better direction....

Great AT for mostly on road use with some dirt, gravel, sand mixed in. One of the lightest AT tires om the market and great for gas mileage. I barely lost any mpgs. Not that great for off road use though. Wouldn't run it near any rocks.
 
I want to point out the TRDP has Terra Grapplers, not Terra Grappler G2. That being said, the TG are good all around tire as far as factory rubber is concerned, but I will be migrating to BFG KO2's as soon as the TG are worn out. My tire guy says the G2 are improved over the regular TG in longer mileage and better offroad/snow traction. Just based on a cursory look at the tread difference, I find it a little hard to believe there is much of a difference.

Where did you find the wheels?
 
I have a '16 Trail Edition and I immediately purchase the Terra Grappler G2's and they have been great! They have not failed or disappointed yet. The only reason I would choose a different tire was for aesthetic reasons, i.e.; a much more aggressive tire.
I primarily drive on road with the occasional off road. No rock crawling etc.
if you primarily drive on road, the TGG2 should make you happy.

If they are similar to the original Terra Grapplers, I would stay away. The P265s that came on my Pro sucked. I had several punctures, and they wore out fast. They were also the worst tire(short of a mud terrain) on wet pavement that I have ever owned.
 
I got those on my truck when I changed the wheels and they were nice at first but I hate them in the rain. I got about 30k on them now and am for sure getting rid of them before the winter. Most likely the exo grappler or some duratracs
 
OK, my stock tires are Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684 II, which appears to be the least off road orientated tire of the Dueler series. My driving is as follows:

- Im an avid skiier, so a considerable amount of high mountain pavement driving to the resorts, OFTEN IN SNOW.

- l live in Durango, Co so intend on doing a lot of the moderate to tough unpaved jeep trails ( Black Bear Pass, Imogene Pass, Ophir Pass, etc). Also want to do some trails around Moab. I DO NOT see any real tecnical, rock climbing, etc.

So what is better for me, the stock Bridgestones, the Terra Grappler G2, or something else?
 
I suggest doing your homework on all of the AT options available before settling. Do you know what size you want and the pros-cons of going up in size vs. keeping stock size?

Based on what you are saying here, you will want more than the Terra G2. Duelers won't cut it at all. G2s are fine for easy to moderate off-roading and mostly road, not great in rain but not a deal breaker either. I would go with KO2 or something along that line, for what you are looking to do. I have the G2s and I like them, but at the moment I do a lot of on road driving. When I start doing more off-road I will be going with KO2 like I have on my Jeep.
 
I have the Terra Grappler G2 tires on my 15 trd pro. I do a lot of city driving and they are great for that. The tires are quiet and provide a comfortable ride. With that said I found myself going uphill in some mud this weekend on the trails. The tires cake up in these conditions and do not clean well. I have found that the tires are great in every condition except for mud.

BF Goodrich KO2.
 
Ok, sounds like people have had good experiences with the K02. Next question, they offer a "C" rated and an "E" rated tire. From the weights and load capacities of the tires, the "E" rated is heavier duty. Which would you select? Are the "E" rated tires for towing or hauling heavy loads?

I went with BFGs in 265/70/17 in C rating to save weight. Not a lot of other choices for C rated out there. I believe most others all have Es. A few pounds helps though.
