Test Drove a 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 Today

As a vintage race car driver with copious track time who grew up in San Diego in flip-flops, there is never a good way to drive in flip-flops. Period. And frankly, we have the best summers in the country in the PNW. Dry and sunny with green forests all about. No bugs or humidity issues. It makes our soggy, grey and miserably wet winter worth it. But there are too f'in many "snowflakes" that live here. It's getting old.

I love the design coming out Land Rover these days, but you couldn't pay me to own one. One of my best friends was a service dept. manager at our local Jaquar/Land Rover dealership until he took a new job recently, and the stories he has... The venerable Defender line included. Oh those guys around here are so smug, until their axles fall out...

What's funny about this is that my good friend bought a '15 LR RR Evoque and the front bumper did literally fall off on the highway within the first year. As in it started making bad noise and she pulled over and the bumper cover had come off and was dragging underneath. She kept it about 1 year and took a bath on it. Traded for a Cayenne - which is a much nicer vehicle all around. Within a year many of the functions like self parking had failed and would just throw an error. Dealers could not fix the problem. But she had bought it in Germany in the military and it wasn't an option to go through the normal route of demanding a fix or buy back in the USA, so it's someone else's problem now.

ha awesome..every Rover should come with its own trailer to salvage any parts that fall off on the road.

The prices they charge for these vehicles and they are absolutely hunks of shit. Now if only Toyota and Lexus would get going on design and style the way rover does it... :bump2:

To be clear you're talking about the Ford Explorer version right? In this case I think Ford did a better job on the interior than LR did. I do prefer the LR5's sheet metal and paint scheme better though. The Ford has a better engine though.

Thanks- I'm sure there are a few of us on here who have gone from Land Rovers to Toyotas. The seating and knee resting position in the new Disco is just bad design. I never had any serious problems with my LR3/discovery 3 (owned 2). However, I got nervous with my last one when I got close to 100K miles and sold it. The bills and problems were coming. In my opinion, LR has mostly abandoned its "heritage"- all those gizmos and gadgets cost $$ to replace/repair. I used to love the Rovers but these days I would not buy one. The new Discovery looks terrible- no heritage there whatsoever. Definitely geared toward the ladies. Still love the old Defenders and am interested to see what LR does with the new Defender. LR Diesels in the U.S. are a relatively new thing- wish Toyota would start putting some in their trucks in the states.
