How are you looking for trails? I do most of my research with Google Earth. I find a road that goes into an area I'd like to get to, then I find out if it's public or private property and contact the agency that administers it. Here in Utah, that's normally BLM, Forest Service, or the county. You can also get with local 4wheeling clubs for ideas. Most areas have at least one active club that keeps a database of trails and their status, look around for that. Finally, just call the BLM. Call the Forest Service. Ask them for a copy of the motor vehicle use maps or travel plans for a given area. Take a map and GPS unit and go explore.
Thanks for looking for places to legally wheel instead of just driving anywhere you feel like. It's not always easy to find out about the best spots, but hopefully I've given you something to work with.

Thanks for advice I'll need to look into that but you'd be surprised. Almost 99% of the land in Texas is private property.. I mean there is nothing for the public...

I know there's good wheeling in Texas, I've seen the pics. 
PM Helomech on here, he's in Texas and I know he gets out and about. Find the Toyota Land Cruiser Association and TTORA regional forums for Texas, those are both really big wheeling clubs and there will be folks there that can help too.

Oh don't get me wrong there are. But in most of these you have to pay to have access.. Some places charge anywhere from 75 to 100 bucks just to get in with your rig :madgrin:.. I guess its just frustrating that we have to drive for hours to find some nice scenery to trail w/o getting in trouble or having to pay..

When I had my Durango years ago, and actually used it off road. I always found it difficult to find anywhere to go that was really good. There was a place near Old Towne Spring, but my understanding is they've banned vehicles back there now, and I was walking a trail one day looking for some photo op places and saw a cop chase down some people on a 4 wheeler.
One of the places that was "easy" to get to, is now an apartment complex. Sadly, the concrete jungle of Houston isn't very offroad friendly IMO...but I'm not from here, so I don't really know if there's places I'm just not aware of that could be worth going to.

I actually lived up in Greely and Denver for a few years. Always something to do or somewhere to go or something to see.. Then I moved to Cheyene then back here.. Dude its a great place to work and raise a family but its absolutely dead as far as things to enjoy on the outdoors. No trails, very few national parks, and almost every square inch is privately owned.. The few places that are public are either very neglected or barren.. Not to mention the drought that's been going on just making it worse.. People here are great and very friendly just sucks we really have to make that much of an effort to enjoy the things we have in common..

I lived in Austin for 4 years before I moved up here and my favorite spot was Hidden Falls Adventrure Park in Marble Falls, TX. Here is a pretty good list of other places around TX: KrawlTex Custom Shop.

Maybe you should check out the BIG BEND area. I've gone wheeling there for years. Besides, EVERY TEXAN should visit there at least once in their life!!!!

We're in DFW and we go to Bridgeport Off Road Park sometimes, good place to wheel and reasonable prices. Check out LSLC to for ideas too.

$15 for a yearly decal, no additional fees that I can see.
I also know of some small spots to wheel near Katy,TX if that helps at all. But usually I'm out at friend's property or on their hunting lease for wheeling, fishing, and blowing stuff up with tannerite. :yo:

Some will argue, but you are correct. I am from the west coast and most of the land is BLM. Here in North Texas (I'm in Saginaw) there is no good place to wheel. And no place that is free. it sucks, because if you want to go camping off the beaten path.....you cant.
Bridgeport is Okay, Gilmer (Barnwell Mountain) is okay... But its best to head north to Clayton OK for free public trails
