Texas to Alaska and back 2017

I plan on doing a full write-up when we return as I have for all of our trips (see signature) with exception of one I never got around to posting. With that said, I'll post some photos in here from time to time for those who are interested.

We departed from Austin last Saturday, and just arrived in Alaska this evening. We had planned on arriving earlier, but because I don't travel without firearms, I had to ship my handguns to an FFL in Alaska, and that took longer than expected. We basically timed it just right. Here are some quick photos from our trip so far.

I'll explain the photos later if I have cell service.

Sub'd, we are heading up in 3 weeks. I'll listen to any suggestions you have.

Side note, you can bring a long gun through Canada to Alaska under the auspices of protection from wildlife while camping. There is a $25 fee and a form you fill out at the border.
 
Sounds like a legendary trip even before you got to Alaska! That's a whole ton of ground to cover; looking forward to reading your story and seeing pictures of the journey.

Yeah, I brought two handguns, and a shotgun. The handguns I shipped to this company in Tok, AK called Wolfhawk shipping. The website didn't look like much, but I checked the sitemap and it's updated regularly. I called and the lady Barb on the phone was real nice, and knowledgeable about the process. I've never had to ship firearms before, so I didn't know a lot about it.

They provided all the info I needed, and recommended a good FFL in Montana to ship from. I picked them up in Tok right when we crossed into Alaska. The shotgun I just filled out the form and paid $25. It was real easy, and the RCMP didn't give me any fuss over it (no searching of my vehicle or anything). They didn't even look at the gun to verify anything, they just took my word for it. I was surprised after all the horror stories of bringing firearms into Canada. The reason for bringing my shotgun through was just transit to Alaska, and they had no problem with that reason.

From my understanding each border crossing point is different though. The Wolfhawk place told me to stay away from the Sumas border in Washington. They have had multiple customers cross there, and have heard nothing good like getting their whole vehicle searched taking hours and such.

By the way, we arrived in Deadhorse tonight around 11:15PM.

Like the OP said, you don't want to bring a gun through the border. Best to send to an FFL in Alaska then use them to ship back to your home town FFL. However, you can bring ammo through Canada. At least you could when I went through in 2010 and at that time you were allowed up to 5,000 rounds. Before I ETS'd out of Ft Wainwright I decided I should count my ammo, I had 4,990 rounds...

I actually carried my handguns from Texas to Montana. I FFLed them to Alaska and picked them up. I plan on doing the same thing backward on the way back. I decided not to bring handgun ammo through as I planned because I didn't want to raise suspicion and waste time getting searched, so I just bought new ammo in Alaska. I'll plink it before I ship them to Montana.

Anyway, here are a couple photos on our way out of the Dalton. I was going to take an ending Dalton Highway sign photo, but some prick big rig trucker thinks he's funny.

That's the best option, no need to raise any question. I moved in January and it was-55F, too cold to shoot and I simply had too much to unload. When I crossed the border they asked if I had firearms, "No", and if I had ammunition, "Yes but I have under xx rounds". That was it. But things may have changed in today's political environment.

Your trip looks epic, I sure miss Alaska. Have a great trip!

We're making our way to Denali today! We're excited to finally get some good hiking in. Most of this trip has been driving so far, which is less than desirable.

Be SURE to stop at 49th State Brewing Co in Healy, AK and get the Fish n Chips. They are Halibut steak in beer batter. Best Fish n Chips of my life. That's the only thing I tried. It was so awesome.

Please post some pics later of Denali. We only make it to mile 31 since the rest was closed. I'll be going back for the rest next trip.

The other awesome thing we did on my trip was take a flight tour over Denali. Completely worth the cost. Just amazing. I posted pics in my build. No matter what you do I'm sure you'll have a good time.

We already passed Healy. We'll see about eating there on our way back through. I'll be sure to take a bunch of photos.

F**K YEAH!

This is a trip I'm planning for myself, long-term. Well, not Texas to Alaska, but to travel to Alaska overland. I've seen a couple vids and trip articles and made that one of my goals.

So.... seeing you doing this.... woooooooooooo!
Good stuff man!
