Have 4Runner, will travel.
Yes definitely know a few from NM. Texas is a big state. Checking to see where everyone is at. Never know they could be close?? Have to be willing to travel we’re im at.

I am a little south of Ft Worth but get around the state pretty regular. I just got back from BBRSP and am planning a trip to the Lincoln National Forest sometime in 2018. I am always open to new rigs as long as they are correctly prepared.

I'm in San Antonio. LOTS of Toyotas around here, but the Toyota plant probably doesn't hurt. 
If you're on Facebook, there are quite a few groups. Texas Overland is the biggest and covers the whole state, but most members are near San Antonio and Austin. Texas Overland has an entire files tab with an insane amount of places and routes to explore. Soft Roaders is technically national and all makes/models, but a lot of 4runners in the DFW arewa. Houston Overland completes the trifecta for Houston. Feel free to join any or all. Most are part of all 3 groups.

Yes for the most part I would agree. Texas is a BIG State and weather in Houston can be drastically different than Amarillo. Depending on where you're going do your home work. April- May can be brutal in Big Bend, and beautiful in the Hill country

Thanks for the destination idea! Can you expand on correctly prepared? I get a sense you mean lift, recovery kit, tires, etc?

Correctly prepared is multi level in this case. If I have been to the place before then I go off my base line from the last trip and make any seasonal adjustments.
If I have never been there before (like LNF right now) then I am spending a few months looking over a variety of maps, online trips, and travel data from the forest service and such. I also try to get HAM radio repeater info in the event there is problems and I do not have cell service.
Vehicle prep
Almost required: small lift, good AT tires at a minimum, and at least one recovery device (winch or traction mats), and extra fuel
Better prepared: sliders, rear locker, and at least a front skid
