I have a 04 4Runner SR5 with a stock stereo (no JBL). I rented a 2002 Tahoe and when I went to a radio station I could see the name of the song and the artist scrolling by on the screen ( it did not have XM or a nav system) can my 4Runner do this or do i need an aftermarket mod?

What you saw was RDS (radio data system). It was only available on the 2003-2005 JBL 6-disc changer headunit and the navigation systems.

just to note, it's not available on the 06-07 6disc anymore. Just the nav units have it now.

I really like having it on my 04.

My 06 Limited with NAV does NOT show it either. does it need to be turned on?

Do you have anything that says RDS on the front of the unit?

It may just be none of the stations you listen too, use the feature??

I'm pretty sure the Nav units still have the RDS feature. I sure hope they do, because I want to upgrade to Nav, but don't want to lose the RDS tho.

You must be listening to a station that does not broadcast an RDS message. My parents 2006 4Runner with nav has this feature.

Related to this on the CD side --- I have the JBL Single CD ('03 SE) with the TEXT button. This wouldn't work with any bought CD (even Sony ones which supposedly have the text). After stepping on and breaking a CD used in the car - I started to burn archive copies for use on the road. I noticed that burning them with NERO SW where it looks up the titles on the internet will allow the TEXT funtion to work - it displays like for 15 or so character of the album and then the song title. You can alter the display info in Nero before you burn the CD.
