friday we went to the san gabriel ohv area/azusa canyon.

sunday we drove the rincon shortcut trail and got a great view of azusa canyon and the city.

So, I assume the road (highway 39) is now open. It was closed a while from the heavy rains last winter. Looks like you had a nice trip. How was the rincon shortcut? Is it easy, difficult, moderate?

rincon shortcut was my very first trail. so i don't know how to compare it to others but i feel that it was very easy. it is about 24 miles long. we only drove half of it becaust it was getting late. as far as we drove, it is a single lane unpaved road (that can get very narrow at times) to the top of the mountain to get a great veiw of the city. one of the stops you can see all the fun everyone's having at the san gabriel ohv area. lots of mountains/nature stuff all around. there were no water crossings. there were no major obstacles that i can think of except when the sun was setting, the sun would sometimes block my view of the pathway and i couldn't see if i was going to fall off the cliff or what. in the next few weeks, we might go back and try to finish it.

i'm still trying to get the other rincon trail pics. i'll be updating this thread when i do get them.

Wishlist, where were the pics taken of the water crossing? Thought your description mention that was in Azusa as well. My buddy and I are going to drive the Ricon shortcut this weekend, but if that water crossing near the OHV is close we might stop by as well.

Not to get too off topic, does anyone have a hand-held GPS unit that can get long/lat coordinates? Might be useful for others to track down exactly where most of you more adventurous types have been.

in order to drive the rincon-shortcut, you have to stop at the office at the san gabriel canyon ohv area and tell them you're going to drive rincon-shortcut. there is no charge to drive that road. if you want to drive in the san gabriel canyon ohv area, you must have 4wd and pay $8 to enter. have all the fun you want in there. it's like a skate park, but instead of skateboards, it's ohv's and other 4x4's. i never went into the big mud pits or climbed the sides of those mountains but it was fun getting to the end and watching the action around us. on weekends, this place is packed. i went on a friday and there were a few there but nowhere near the amount that was there sunday.

Hey wishlist, I just drove the Ricon Shortcut today. All-in-all it was pretty cool. I read about the trail in Charles Wells' book, and he's pretty much dead on. Although the trail is rated easy by Wells, it does get a bit hairy (by my standards) a bit past the 16th mile. In any case, I made it through on my RWD T4R so I'm happy about that. Too bad I can't get into the OHV park!
