I think the whole point of it is to illuminate the shifter area without effecting night time vision. It shouldn't be to hard to switch out the LED if you really wanted to though. You best bet would be to pull it apart and see what's in there right now.
I havent replaced the one above the shifter, but I do plan to change out the one right above the driver and passenger's feet. It shouldn't be much different. I checked it out and it looks to be a 5mm led (maybe even 3mm). There was no solder, it was simply plug and play. I plan to change it to cool white, similar to the one above the shifter. I am going to take the sunglass storage area apart this weekend to install my Pioneer 120bt mic and will try to snap some pics for you.

The brightness is adjusted by the dimmer switch on the dash--FYI. I'm always trying to dim things down on mine.

I think the ambient lighting is standard, I noticed it was in all the models we test drove. The door handle lighting you might be talking about is the lighting under the mirrors. They light up when you unlock the doors, illuminating the handles, the door, and the ground. Puddle lights I think, which are also standard I think.

I actually saw it on this site Toyota 4Runner History 2010 which came up in another thread.
under the first list of major changes, it says:
"Optional footwell lighting, interior door handle lights and shifter lighting from roof mounted console"

Only the Limited models have door handle LEDs. I put them in mine- sp8balls soon with his usual sweet writeup. The OH LED is soldered in. I had every single part of that console apart last week so I'm sure of that. The entire circuit board comes out pretty easily to access it though should you choose to change it... I think it may be easier to modify the diffuser that snaps in over it if you want brighter light. That LED is already pretty bright!

YEP me 2. I bought the RED leds, cause i like the red look. Youll notice that the different colors yield slightly different part numbers...haha

Ha! Had my 4runner 7 months now and just realizing their is ambient light coming from the roof center console, and also you can dim the interior lights. Also finding out a pen holder in the center console lid.

One of my favorite little accents in the interior, I did look into a way to putting a brighter LED in there but it's literally soldered to the board
