I have owned my 4Runner for a year now and have only made minor changes.This is my first 4WD, but I have driven Humvees in the military often, so I have some idea on off road driving. Funny story about my Runner when I first bought it. First of all it was used, and still had factory tires. Secondly I had no idea how to manipulate the 4WD system then. So I decided to test it off road anyway. There was about a one hundred foot section of trail that was swampy mud. I gunned it so that I would not get bogged down in it. What i didn't know then was that the VSC starts to cut power off. So there I am, hearing the Beep-beep-beep and getting slower, and slower then stopped right in the middle of the bog. OOPS. My wife was so pissed at me! What I have learned is that VSC is great on gravel and snow covered roads, but turn it OFF before going off road! Also, worn factory tires are not good for mud.
