The 4runner "saga"

So I was reading "Truck Trend" magazine and on the 4Runner pages (obviously reviewing the '10 model) they said-

Since 1984 (creation of the great beast) 1.8 Million 4Runners have been sold.
Since '84 until 09' quoted 1.3 Million of those 1.8 are still on the road today.


Now that's something to go brag about to your Jeep, Dodge, Ford, and Truck friends! Happy Holidays.

I would love to know a figure for 10-14years through present. IMHO the 3.0L caused many to drop. The 3rd and 4th are pretty incredible thusfar. (I love the 1st gens too I'm just saying some first gens and many 2nds probably are out of service due to the 3.0L.)


I'll bet that number is even more impressive!

You know, I've heard all the horror stories about the 3.slow and its head gasket problems, but I swear I can't drive down any street in the Denver area for more than 5 minutes without seeing a 2nd gen 4runner, and most of them have the V6 emblem as well.

Sometimes just for fun when I'm in a parking lot I'll count the number of 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen 4runners that I see. It's never fewer than 5 or 6 in a decent sized lot and often it's higher than that.

I see a lot more 2nd gen 4runners than I do 1st gens.

I think sometimes the 2nd gen tends to get overlooked because if you don't know much about 4runners, there's not much difference between a 2nd and a 3rd gen (I'll confess, until I got my 3rd gen, I couldn't tell the difference.)

Also, regarding the 1.8 million statistic, is that just North American 4runners or does it include the Hilux Surf which is what the 4runner is called in other world markets?

That's cool, good to know. I like the looks of the 2nd gen. I don't know much about how they drive. My only experience w/ 3.slow was in a Camry. It was smooth and ran good just nothing real special. It did go through 1 set of gaskets in the time my Dad owned the 1993 Camry.

Living in Colorado might not be a real assesment of 4Runners since I think we have one of the biggest per capita population of Toyota trucks. I can drive 2 miles up to the grocery store and see 2nd,3rd and 4th gens but 3rd and 4th are more common around SW Littleton.(SW Denver)

I've been at stoplights where every gen is represented but this is Colorado and going to Florida and spending a week in Washington DC you had to really look to see any 4Runners and most are 4th gens or 2wd 3rd gens and Subarus are almost non exisitent in Florida as opposed to Colorado but that's due to us having winter.
