The dreaded driveline'clunk'

I've got the clunk in my 06 4runner with 40k kms and would like some advice (I've searched this and yotatech and have read up on what I think is the issue)....

Called my dealership and asked if I could stop by and have the lube bay grease the driveline bc I think they missed it during the last service (done 3 weeks ago). I tried to try explain that I think that it should solve a clunk that I am experiencing and that research on the web leads me to believe its this problem....well now the service rep wants the T4R for a couple of hours and that a tech should look at it and not someone in the lube bay....what a pain to drop off my vechile for something like this. My question is, should a tech even lube the driveline? (read that too much grease adds pressure to the diff and that it's bad) Or is it a job that the lube bay should even be able to do? Should I be asking for this lube every service and do you think an oil change 'tech' is aware that two different types of grease should be used (i.e is this a common thing for other toyotas...cause the ratio of 4runners to other models on my dealer lot is low).

Maybe paranio is setting in, but after returning a set of 3rd gen floor mats and then telling the parts person what the proper part number is too order, my confidence level is slowly slipping. Get this; originally they said that I had the proper mats that no other mats were available (but they didn't fit and they looked nothing like the dirty ones in my 06). I then looked up the part number in one of the online stores and then called the part number in. The mats came in two days later and parts person said 'our parts system from toyota must be out of date, sorry for the trouble'

Now if the parts system is out of date should I wonder what the techs are using for a reference?

Getting back to my problem...do you think it's worth a shop visit or should wait until the next lube and ask the lube bay to grease the driveline?

Thanks

Sometimes, if you want it done right, you've gotta do it yourself! I haven't looked into the Lexus GX propellor shaft, but I heard if you install the new one (per Lexus TSB, where's ours?@!) it will solve the problem.

I agree with doing it yourself. It's really quite easy, easier than changing the oil. The only difficult part is getting to the zerk fittings on the spider joint and shaft if they are rotated out of the way. Sometimes you may have to slightly move your truck. Just go to your auto supply store and get a good grease gun and some grease, crawl under your truck, clean the zerks, and pump a little grease into them. Of all the Toyo dealerships I've been to, they NEVER do it unless I specifically ask for it. I said screw it, I can do it myself. At least you know it was done. Plenty of threads on the type of grease and what not.

anyone have a copy of the TSB

Wondering if anyone has the TSB for this, kinda want to set the dealer straight on this since I just bought this T4R 3 weeks ago and would like the dealership to make it right....if not I'll just go get a grease gun and do it myself

Just buy the grease gun and do it yourself, if it doesnt go away then hassle with the dealer about it. I understand wanting them to make it right, but seriously, it will be much easier to just do it.

It's the first post under 'Problems & Warranty'

I had the dealer replace the driveshaft ( under warranty), lap the splines with very fine valve grinding compound, and pack the splines ( not filled up, just the splines) with Sta-Lube Moly-Graph before reassembly. So far, so good.

Lap and lube on your existing driveshaft would probably work, too. Call Toyota customer care and open up an issue. Get the service manager at the dealership involved, and ask for the regional tech rep to get involved.

Move this thread over to the main thread under 'Problems & Warranty' ( I'm not a moderator - I can't move it...)

Good luck!

The lastest Lexus TSB calls for the replacement of the driveshaft and bigger rear control arms. Many owners have had just the driveshaft replace and the cluck comes back within months. Greasing it during each oil change will work too.
