The Father Teaching his Daughter a lesson, Reactions?

I think she should actually start her own strip club called "Daddy Issues"

Stick it to the man, no pun intended.

Uhhh...what if she is like anyone of these beauties?

I believe kids are a DIRECT reflection of their parents. If the parents don't instill good behavior and respect in their kids when they were small how can you expect them to behave well when they get older. I can tell you from experience that most parents do not what to discipline their kids or even say NO, when it is needed! How can you expect your child to respect you when you are acting like a child yourself? All he taught his daughter was when there is a problem with kids you solve it by putting on a public display of anger and to be violent and intimidating. Maybe this is how he was brought up. This guy should have realized his approach on handling this type of situation didn't work the first time and maybe he needed to get some good advice from a good/experienced/professional source. Since he is an IT guy maybe he should have used that laptop to get some useful information that could have very will helped. I found that ALL kids need to get a job ASAP, which will teach them a sense of value and pride and helps them realize that if you work hard you can have all the things in life that other kids think should be given to them. I found jobs for my three daughters when they reached 14 years old (working in day care centers). Not only did it teach them responsibility, it also helped them understand how kids can be very difficult to deal with when they were spoiled or not disciplined at a young age. I also forced them to save money and plan for the things in life that most parents think they should be giving their kids. I can tell you that after my kids grew up they had thanked me for doing the hard things that helped them in life.

The one thing I firmly believe in is that fear and intimidation will make raising kids harder and will also influence them on how they raise their kids. The greatest feeling in the world about having kids is when they do things based on respect and love!

IMO, I love the dad LOL I saw this video when it first hit. I laughed so hard that I actually wanted to look up the daughters Facebook for myself, just to see the display picture the dad put up.

I agree with you to an extent KOZ. It also factors in the stupid twits your kids hangout with. Believe you me, you and I both know that from experience, as being some kids decide they want to be "cool" and "fit in" with stupid people.

I give the pops props for doing what he did, and I would have smacked that girl silly if she was my daughter.

When I have kids, They're going to be put to work WELL before they are even 10. They're going to learn the definition of oldschool 'hard work' and the value of honesty, a dime, and to be responsible for themselves. That being said I'm not going to win the 'world's toughest dad' competition. I'll still reward my kids, but for a job well done, or atleast their best forth effort.

Wait. Which one is the adult again??

This is ridiculous. An angry emotional outburst from a 15 year old girl?! WHO WOULD HAVE EXPECTED THAT??

I assume all of you defending the father have never said anything bad about your parents in your life? Or said something critical of someone as a means to vent in a time of frustration?

As a former 15 year old I know for CERTAIN that the majority of kids that age complain about their parents at some point.

Seems to me that the fathers 'snooping' was a little inappropriate. The message was only supposed to be between her friends, not public to the world like a youtube video...

No. I have NEVER complained that I had to do stuff around my house. I have no right to complain about my parents. They didn't have to give me half the stuff they did.

There is venting and then there is taking it too far. Posting on Facebook is way out of line. Remember this isn't the first time she got caught doing the same thing.

JD - no offense, but I think you're a little short-sighted on this one. I complained about my parents, sure, but I never did it so the world could hear my crying and personal attacks, especially after I had been caught before.

I would reiterate the fact that her post was on Facebook, set to be visible only to her friends. Thats far from 'the world' and certainly not to over 22+ million people on youtube. I just dont think its that SHOCKING of behaviour for a 15 year old girl. What I did find shocking was a grown man airing his families dirty laundry out on youtube and firing shots into his daughters laptop in some sort of childish game of "I'll show you".

As has been mentioned, while none of us know this family personally, it would seem that the behavior could have been learned.
I dunno, IMO a whole different parenting style is needed. Positive reinforcement is more effective than extreme discipline. For example, he could reward his daughter when she does her chores and does a good job, with some amount of money and then let her use that money to buy her own laptop.

Oh, thats bullsh*t, or you don't really don't have to do much.

Generalizing your feelings/behaviors onto others? This perfectly shows how the young thinks nowadays!

And no, i did not b!tch nor had half the things she said about my parents. But then again, maybe my parents were good and gave me proper strict discipline that i needed. YMMV.

True, but not to the DEGREE of this girl! That is the difference here. Did you forget that she publicly (or privately if you think FB is private!) said that her parents are up the sh!t creek when they get old?? Sorry, in my worst days, i would not dare say that about my parents! You may be different...but then again, that is the problem these days with the younger generation, isn't it? I am 37 years old...so, i am not that far off...but my parents taught me better.

Sorry, this whole psychology crap about positive reinforcement only takes you so far. Firm discipline is needed. Sure, you can give positive reinforcement, but there must be a balance of negative reinforcement if positive does not work. And there must be "house rules"...and it does not mean that you get money for following them..."house rules" = laws of nature!

I think many people might be surprised, to say the least, at what the massive amounts of data from twin and adoption research suggest about the effect of parenting on the long run behavior of children. Nature appears to hold more sway than popularly believed (with plenty of qualifiers, of course). Some might bristle at the idea, but the good news appears to be that parents can perhaps lighten up just a little bit and enjoy their kids more instead of sometimes making everyone miserable by taking unpleasant actions deemed necessary by their presumed effect many years hence.

Nature can only do so much (thus, the qualifiers)...parenting has much to do with how a kid behave. Sure, there are the good kids and the bad kids genetically...but with proper parenting, you can much difference in a kid's life. I love my mother's analogy...kids growing is like a tree...if you let the tree have many branches, then it will not grow strong...so, as a parent, you need to trim the branches so that a tree grows straight and strong. Some branches may be harder to trim than others, but you gotta try your best to aim the tree in the right direction.

Not suggesting otherwise in the short term.

It's the efforts to mold future adult behavior that might warrant a second look, especially those efforts that make life currently unpleasant for everyone.

Well it sounds like her facebook status was set to only make the post visible to her friends. So that right there dramatically limits who can see it, it is far from 'the world' or being 'public'.

The only thing I can add is that we really have nothing to compare this to as when we were all kids there were no cell phones or facebook. Kids use these technologies the same way that we used to talk or call our friends.

I dunno, IMO theres a big difference between someone 'trash talking' about someone to their friends and actually saying it to their face and meaning it.

That's my point...in my wildest dream, i would NOT tell my friends that i would let my parents rod and die on their own! Not over the phone, nor for giggles and laughs. Again, this is where i was raised differently from you youngsters i guess....

So, if i turn my face away from someone and cuss at them, then it is OK and that i did not mean it?? So, it is only a big deal when you cuss your parents out in front of their face? When is it ever OK to trash talk your parents to anyone?? Wow, there is a HUGE gap of tolerance b/w you and me, JD.

So, we should just let kids be themselves without any parenting/rules since Nature will take its course? Yeah, for every Einstein, you have a milion and one bums and robbers....
