The "Hidden" GPS Mod

I have always hated portable GPS systems bc they require the mount to be on the windshield and so after my first one got stolen i have been looking to make it a little more hidden.

ok so i got the idea from dpodo's thread on putting the GPS into the sun visor.. well from what i found out, the 4th gen sun visors are made much better then the ones we have in the 3rd gens so i had to get sort of creative. The visor on the 3rd gens are only stuffed with foam and a piece of cardboard.

Well here are some pics of my process that ive done and its still being worked on so that the final product will look almost like factory. Well let me know wat u guys think...

Still missing the bordering frame to keep it held in and a flush perfect look... if i cant get it to work out then ill just stick with the mounting of picture #3.

That's a pretty good idea. I'd have to see it while driving to see how easy it is to view. I personally hate driving with the sun visor down. Maybe putting it on the passenger side would be a better fit for me.

ya i hate using the sun visor usually but i figured since i dont use my gps that often that it would be a great place since its hidden from ppl who are lurking to break into my car and i can learn to like it for that reason alone.

haha nice idea, but i donno if that would hurt my head looking up so high..ur first one got stolen? that sucks, did they pry ur door or break a window?

well actually they broke into my car bc i just picked up my cousin from the airport and had to help carry in his luggage so i forgot to lock the door and so they broke it and stole my subs, amp, radar, gps, ipod, and $300 worth of tools... keep in mind this was infront of my house (gated community and is a nice area) on my birthday! i was so pissed when i went out and found everything missing.

That is a sweet idea,be sure to post up a pic when it's done.I have been trying to figure out how to mount my GPS so it is not so obvious to someone walking by,that really sucks you lost all your stuff like that.

lol ya well i got everything replaced for really cheap or free... im glad i know alot of ppl who are willing to help when im in need. haha

This is pretty cool, and you don't have to keep your visor down, you could probably just listen to the GPS and flip it down when you need to check distance to the next turn or what not.

Right on man that's a great idea. I'm thinking, what if you mount in on the passenger one and then flip the left side in to angle it towards the driver. Keep us posted for sure

ok so i thought bout hardwiring it but the only prob is that the GPS take only 5 volts so ull have to buy a converter that costs $13 (got that info from dpodo's thread). The way mine works right now is with the cig lighter and so when u have it plugged in the GPS turns on only when the car is on and turns off when the car is off so it works perfectly the way i need it.

miller: i thought bout that but the only thing is i think it would be a pain if im the only person in the car. I just hooked it up for a test run and well the view isnt too bad and i can just flip it up when i dont really need to view the map bc i can still hear the voice directions... Ill get some pics up tom of it mounted and hopefully itll have it completed by this weekend.

I've got my GPS hard wired w/o the use of any converter. It comes on when I turn the key to ACC and turns off when I turn the truck off. Only took a $6 relay and some wiring I had laying around to do it. Just have to dismantle the cig lighter adapter and tap the pwr and grd wires (or do like I did and solder 2 new wires into the board). I posted a simple wiring diagram in my thread on YT if you're interested.

Just have to buy a 2nd cig light adapter power cable if you want to use the gps in a different vehicle.

Looks cool, im still trying to get it sent i work from 7 to 5 and my dad had the 4runner at the airport for the past few days, saturday it'll go out man, if you want i have a spare driver visor incase this idea goes south...

oh ok kool... thanx for the info but ill prob just stick with using the cig lighter since its free and works with the car on/off so far. I might do the hardwire down the line when i have some extra cash.

cool idea man and looks good so far. interested in seeing how this turns out bc i've been trying to figure out something to do w/ my garmin too.

sweet dude! i cant wait til i get it so i can listen to CDs for longer then a week... haha but for the visor, thnx for the offer dude but i dont think ill end up needing it since i already like it now even though it doesnt look perfect.
