The Journey Begins

I have grown up out in the country, not a city boy. Unfortunately I have grown up in Oregon (still like it), which is tough if you ride motorcycles off road. I'm used to folks up here that like to chain themselves to trees in the name of environmental causes. There just isn't anything right in their heads. Nature is ours to enjoy, responsibly, so stay out of the way.

Now I have finally made it to the land of milk and honey of the off road world... southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado. It is nothing short of breathtaking! Traildamage.com is my guide. I just wish I had more time. It's been a long time coming for me to get down here and I wish I would have come sooner.

For those of you that live in the area or are withing 8 hours, I'm jealous. This might have to be an annual trip. Engineer Pass tomorrow or Friday and Moab on the way home.

We took a drive out Bachelor's Loop and looked at the mines. It's just awesome out here. I hit a section of trail and put it in 4wd for the first time. The tires and lift are working great and I'm very happy with the set up. Although I haven't hit anything super challenging yet. Gunner was excited to go along for the ride too!

Looks like fun! One of these days I'm gonna stay in that "Last Chance Mine" bunkhouse on Bachelor's Loop...

Don't know what your plans are for Creede, but if you have time the Wheeler Geologic Area is fun. It's on Pool Table Road, it's a pretty easy trail (I did it with 2wd) but it's fun and the geo area is really cool.

Thanks, I'll take a look. We have a friend that's caretaking on a ranch in Creede. Her local friend is over for dinner tonight. I've found the best way to visit an area is to stay with people that live there. That's how I got across Europe. I'll ask about those areas. I just wish I had more time and money. Having a recovery vehicle would be nice too! It's an amazing area the more we get out. My wife loves getting out on the 4wd trails. If I'm not careful I may end up selling my bike and dumping money into the 4runner to do more of this.

We finally left Creede, CO on Saturday. That elevation is hard to get used to after living at 500 feet. We went to Moab, UT and fell in love. That is an incredible area. Pictures don't do it justice. We plan on returning, bringing our motorcycles and spending more time there. The trip was 8 days and 2700 miles. Absolutely no issues with the 4Runner. The FJ coils, DS spacer kit, 5100's and Cooper ATP tires were excellent. We averaged close to 20 MPG on the trip with mostly highway miles. Oddly enough we hit a cattle drive heading north towards Salt Lake City.

Of course after we got home there was a problem. Not even an hour after being home, Gunner tangled with a skunk in the back yard and got sprayed. No problems in the Rockies on a ranch, just at home.

That's some awesome country! I need to get back there with my 4runner. Unfortunately every time I go through there I'm in some kind of car. ie. not a 4x4. And ya I know what you mean about Oregon. I ride dirt too and it seams like every year there's another trail closing:dammit:

That last picture reminds me of the time I got stuck in traffic for over an hour on a lonely Utah highway because of a cattle drive.

The governer of Utah is a dirt biker! I wish he won the Republican nomination and was running for president right now! Something to be said for a guys that realizes that life is about having fun and letting the people do that...

Bring scorpion and rattlesnake repellant! Maybe a good first aid kit! But it does sound like fun.
