I like stock Limited 3rd Gens more than stock 4th Gens.
I like modded 4th Gens though. I wouldn't hesitate to move up to a 4th Gen, in fact I've been crunching some numbers. 3rd Gens are getting a little as far as electronics are concerned.
They still look pretty good from an exterior cosmetic point of view.

My wife has always liked 4runners. I used to but thought they had ruined them (asthetically speaking) when the 4th gens came out. Then the 5th gen came along and we thought it was great. More like a 3rd gen with more room in it. So we bought one. When we decided to get a used one for our daughter, she said fine, as long as its no newer than a 2002 because she thinks the 4th gens are ugly. I dont want to offend any 4th gen'ers. Its just our opinion, but we all share it. With that said, i will acknowledge that i see a 4th gen now and then that looks pretty good. But we prefer the 3rd gens overall but love our new 5th gen as well.

I completely agree. I don't like the 4th gens at all. I really like the 5th gen but I think it's a little too big. I'm very happy with the 3rd gen.

I looked at 4th gens before buying my 3rd gen, and looked at 5th gens since purchasing my 3rd gen. I still drive a 3rd gen

You really want to put that underpowered 4.0 V6 from the 4th gen 4runner into a 3rd gen? Why? Are TBs really that unfriendly to ya? Geez, if this Monday won't ever end.

I too agree that I prefer the aesthetics of a 3rd gen over 4th gen. I do dig a modded 4th gen though. Personally, the 5th gen is too big for me. 2nd gens are great for SAS because of the steering box and are a bit more luxurious. 1st gens come with straight axle but are just too bare boned.

I've had both a 3rd (1998 SR5 V6 2WD, it was totaled) and a 4th (2003 SR5 V8 2WD, current)
I love both. I'd take a 4th only because it's a little more roomier. All I can say is I love both.

If Toyota only kept the manual transmission with the 4th gen I'd likely buy one just because its newer. But I stayed with the 3rd gen for the manual transmission.

First of all, I like all 4runners regardless of year. But if I'm honest, the cream of the crop is the 3rd gen. I think the designers took a couple steps back with both the 4th and 5th gen from an asthetic perspective. But maybe I'm just old....

I think that says it all. It's amazing how quickly some cars and trucks can look dated, especially when the manufacturer redesigns them too often or too differently from the previous one. But then there are some vehicles, like the 3rd gen T4R that just stand on their own and never look old or out of place no matter what has been put in their place.

That's cool people with 3rd gens feel the same way I do.....I'm looking to buy a 2011 4Runner but can't see getting rid of my 97.....glad I've got a 3 car garage....one 4Runner for me, a camry for my wife, another 4Runner for me....
I figure in 7 years, my daughter will be driving, then my son, perhaps they'll want to drive my cool 97 4Runner.....

I love my 3rd gen Highlander edition, but my brothers 4th gen limited is wayyy more roomier inside. That's the only thing i am jealous about.

underpowered compared to what? a 3rd gen? that 4.0l Pulls a lot harder than a 3rd gen and gets the same amount mpg.
