The most annoying rattle!!!

Hello friends, I've got an '04 V8 Sport. It's developer the most annoying rattle emanating from the rear cargo area. It shows at a low speeds like coming to a stop or taking off from a stop. I have mud tires so the chunky wobble at low speeds only enhances the rattle. I'm guessing it's maybe the rear window track system or latch any ideas??

check your jack and tire tools. mine rattle from time to time if theyre not in properly. also could be a piece of trim has come loose in the back

Mine did that too. I had my wife drive around with me in the cargo area while I listened, pushed on things, and pulled on others. It was behind the plastic panel on the lift gate. I could make the rattle stop by putting pressure on a certain part of the plastic cover.

I ended up pulling the access panel off of the cover and shoving a shop towel in there to put back pressure on that spot and it hasn't rattled since.
 
Ha it's funny you say that. My wife had the same idea only problem is I'm 6'3, 275, not exactly the ideal size for riding in the cargo area but I guess I'll have to channel my inner contortionist and get it done.

And so this shop towel fix hasn't hindered the use of the back glass? How long has it been since the "fix"?

No, it didn't hurt anything and the rattle hasn't come back. It's been more than a year.

If you open up the access panel you'll see that there's actually a layer of thick plastic sheeting behind it. You'd have to put something on the other side of the sheeting for it to interfere with the window or locking mechanism.

I got a similiar rattle also in the back i cant pin point it. And having ome 895e rear springs doesnt help. So am switching it out to 5 th gen rear springs soon
 
Had a similar issue not too long ago, turned out it was a heat shield on my exhaust pipe toward the middle of the truck... Drove me nuts lol
 
Another thing to check is the actual rear hatch latch/hook. Mine rattled when closed until I put a wrap of electrical tape around the hoop that the hatch latches onto. It cured the rattle for a while until the tape wore through and requires a new piece of tape a couple times a year.
 
Ok so I checked the tools and jack and all was secure and snug. Exhaust also is intact and tight. It's definitely emanating from the rear cargo area, I believe it is indeed the latch as previously stated so I'm gonna try the tape fix tomorrow. ( fingers crossed as I'm about to lose my mind)[emoji35]

Rattle

After much anguish, I checked the cross members on the roof rack. One was loose, making noise only on bumpy roads. I only wish I had checked this first.
 
I really think mine originates from the rear lift gate. I did find my driver side tail light was missing a nut causing movement so I replaced the nut and SOME of the rattle ceased. I also pulled the rear gate panel and I think it's the rods that cross each other that house the cables for the power window. I think they're bouncing off each other.

Not sure if you're noticing it just on take off and stop, or if just on bumpy roads with closely spaced bumps (like washboarded roads), but if you only notice it on those types of surfaces it could be your license plate rattling on the rear hatch. Mine does that sometimes on washboarded roads, a couple of felt pads with adhesive stuck to the back of the license plate fixes it.
 
Kasey that's exactly when I experience it! And I thought of it earlier and put a sponge underneath it but maybe the felt is a better option

You can find those little felt pads at Wal Mart, but I can't remember what section. Maybe arts and crafts, maybe sewing--they're about the size of a quarter with an adhesive backing, but I'm sure there are a number of other things you could use to create a buffer between the plate and the hatch. Hopefully that takes care of your issue!
