The new guy wants a 4Runner...

Let me introduce myself as I have been lurking on and off for the past 6 months or so. A few years back I had a 2004 Lexus GX470 and absolutely loved it. However, I quickly started driving ~35k miles a year and so I traded it in for a VW Jetta TDI. Yada, yada, yada…I moved back to Pittsburgh for my girlfriend of 4 years, we broke up, so I did something stupid and bought a 2004 Corvette. Now I am ready to trade it in, hopefully not get burned too badly, and get a CPO 2010 4Runner.

From what I have seen, no one on here is a big fan of getting a used 4Runner and just opting for a new one. However, with the 7 year/100k powertrain (I’ve seen a few dealers in my area give lifetime powertrain) I feel like that is the way to go on the vehicle I’m ready to keep for more than 18 months.

Anyways, I feel like I’ve narrowed it down to these 3 4Runners. Obviously the Limited is more, but I know I will love the 4WD system it has as it comes from the GX side (full time, Torsen center diff), but I love the Blizzard Pearl SR5’s I have found (color-wise) and feel that other than Nav and the full-time 4WD it is still an absolutely amazing vehicle. So here are my options…

1) 2010 – Blizzard Pearl on Tan Leather SR5, CPO, 18k miles, no 3rd row (I don’t want it) - $34,995
2) 2010 – Blizzard Pearl on Tan Leather SR5, CPO, 25k miles, no 3rd row - $32,980
3) 2010 – Magnetic Grey on Black Leather Limited, CPO, 46k miles, no 3rd row, Nav - $34,988

Feel free to tell me which one you would make your #1. If I can get any advice on what is a reasonable buying price I would appreciate that. Should I be able to get option 2 for $29.5k…or is it already a really good deal. I’m deferring to the experts on this one. I look forward to being back in the saddle of a great 4x4 again.

For 2010s, at these miles, the prices seem high. I would think you could get a brand new 4runner at these prices - particularly the sr5 models.
 
Might as well buy a new one man!!! Then you dont't have to play the guessing game of how well the person before you was treating it. A new SR5 would be my choice!!
 
Those prices seem extremely high. I just bought a new '11 Trail Edition and compared SR5 prices as well. You could get any of those new here in Atlanta after some haggling for less than the prices you are showing. There's a dealer in Augusta, GA that goes WELL below invoice. His new 2WD SR5s start around $29k add a couple thousand for 4WD.

I agree that the Blizzard Pearl with the Chrome accents is an awesome looking ride!

If you are interested in the 100k warranty, I had the option of adding it to my purchase prices for around $1000 - so don't let that sway your decision.

Also, you seem to trade/move from vehicle to vehicle often. A one owner vehicle will have more value (to a private buyer) than a two owner vehicle if you sell it in the future.

I looked at getting a used 2010 and the numbers just didn't add up. It was cheaper or equal for me to just go brand new.
 
Agree with previous posts. That #1 option is above a negotiated new car price.

I had a 04 GX470 also and loved it. And after the GX, only the Limited will do. The 5th gen LTD is a previous gen GX minus 2 cylinders, minus adj suspension, minus auto wipers, plus smart key, plus hidable 3rd row...

So if I want an SR5 the consensus is I can get a new car for a lower price with leather.

However, if I want the limited (which because of the GX470 I am inclined to want)...is that a good deal at $35k? I can't see that I'm going to get a new Limited that is $40-42kish for $35k.
 
If you're willing to pay 35K for something used, you like... Then why not 40K for something new, you love??? Then maybe you'll keep a vechicle for longer than 18 months!!!
 
You guys are missing a big part of what is good about a CPO, and also shooting into the dark about the pricing as the options are not listed.

IMO, hands down, do a TCUV. Toyota Financial does 2.9% interest on them, 7/100k powertrain, extend your bumper to bumper to 100k for around $600, and you have the vehicle you want paying half the interest with full bumper to bumper to 100k.

As for the prices, they can def be negotiated down. I just paid $31k for my 2010 SR5 with all options available (parking sonar, rev cam, sunroof, leather, third row, etc) minus navigation with lower miles than any listed.

brockeverly is right on why i am looking at CPO. And the general idea that for a given amount of money you can buy more car because it is used. $35k is about the most i'm willing to spend on the sticker price before TTL. So in the $30-35k range I feel my options are CPO SR5, CPO Limited, and New SR5. Having the Lexus in the past (I had bought that used) makes me lean towards the Limited.

And the thing I'm not wanting is referring to 3rd row seats. The whole time I had my lexus I used the 3rd row twice...and I think it was because I insisted we all take one vehicle.

I feel that I can probably get a new SR5 with leather for very close to what I can buy a CPO SR5 with the same options for. I do not feel the same about the limited. (not being sarcastic or smart) but if someone can tell me how or where i can get a 2011 Limited with a sticker of $41-43k for $35k then I'm all ears. I just feel that the new Limited can be had for $37-39k and that is more than i care to spend. I do feel I can get an SR5 that stickers for $35-37k for $31-33k. Maybe I am completely off base, but that is what I am thinking.
 
@OP. My only takeaway from your posts is that it appears you are assuming on the price of new ones, and have not actually priced any.

I also note that the mileage Wty on the LE is 1/2 gone. 46K on a '10 seems a lot to me. Tires? Them 20s ain't cheap.
 
it seems to me that if you know you are going to resell it then why would you pay a premium for a new one. That is a waste. You are correct for those CPO 2010 SR5 prices you could get a new SR5, leather, 4X4(no nav). You probably could not find a limited 2011 model for 35 anywhere.

I think your mind is already made up to buy a used one. Now just find the best one for you. Good Luck
 
I've got a 2011 BP/tan leather SR5 4x4 I'm going to sell in next couple months. <12K miles and going to ask 32K, so those prices look high to me too for a 2010.
 
Grab the LTD CPO for <$33K and I think you are onto something. The SR5's are pretty lackluster even with leather and all when compared to that GX you had. Shoot, save big money and get an 06 GX with 60K miles. Those are a great buy right now being an older gen, just get a warranty. Low to mid 20K range and your back to big pimpin'.

This is almost as good of a deal as I got on mine, sounds great. I wonder if TFS would finance it as a TCUV for the lower rates when it is private party. I am sure a dealer could look it over to certify it.
 
Well I'm flying up to Cape Cod for the weekend, so I won't get to the dealer most likely until Tuesday or Wednesday. I think I'm leaning towards the Limited, but it will be that mass equation of sell price and trade in price. I feel that I'll be looking at the BP SR5 with 25k miles as well. Hopefully the Limited works out and is still there

I thought about a GX again, but I just don't want the same body style twice (probably dumb logic).

I have a question to throw out that I just haven't got a firm answer on...does the limited have ATRAC? Is ATRAC Toyota's response to a locking rear diff without a rear locker? And lastly, did my 04 GX have some version of ATRAC? Or might I be even more impressed with the Limited off road and in the snow? :) Because the GX was a superb foul weather, off road vehicle. As far being on back country 2 lanes with 18 inches of unplowed snow or in a field with mud and hills on a hunting trip I never got stuck or felt I wouldn't make it to my destination.
 
Yes, ATRAC is standard on 4x4s and maybe even 4x2.

I don't think the previous gen GX has ATRAC. It did have traction control and DAC, but not ATRAC. ATRAC is supposed to be incredible, but those with rear locking diff won't say ATRAC is a replacement. 5th Gen should be better offroad than the GX because of ATRAC.
