The one thing I need to know about HVAC

I've learned to live with the HVAC in the 4Runner but one barrier remains on the way to total contentment. I'm not comfortable hitting the auto button and then immediately turning AC off. I'm concerned about a quick on/off being bad for the compressor. Usually I can turn it off before the compressor engages, but sometimes not. The clunk with which it engages doesn't exactly help my comfort level, either.

I seek enlightenment.

Why not keep the AUTO on with the AC off that way next time you start up it will be the same. My frustration is having the recirculation come on when the AUTO is on and AC off and its 80+ inside the truck from sitting in the sun and 60 or less outside.

I've been punching the AUTO button and immediately turning the A/C off from day one in every vehicle with automatic climate control I've ever driven. Never broken anything broken due to this, nor seen anyone else break A/C components due to this.

Don't see many (basically 0) Toyota A/C components break for any reason, for that matter. I'd say you're safe.

If it's still worrying you THAT much....why not just run the A/C for a minute before turning it off?

The situation where it comes up a lot is off road on difficult trails in hot weather. Having the AC kick on and push the rpms up can be a real problem when crawling over rocks so I'd like to punch the AC on and off without worrying about managing it.

Now that's the kind of enlightenment I needed. Thanks for helping me in the direction of HVAC nirvana. I'll be punching away, now.

What you need to do is VERY SIMPLE:

1-KEEP A/C OFF.
2-KEEP RECIRC OFF.
3-TURN ON THE FAN USING THE FAN SPEED.
