The Saddest Day of My Life (HIT AND RUN)

So I was at the bar playing pool with my friends last night and walked up to my car to find this.

Wow, that is absolutely brutal! So sorry to hear.

I couldn't imagine that person got too far as I'm sure his ride would've also been pretty messed up. Should be easy to find.

Hopefully they catch him and make him pay for that in more ways than one!:twak:

Any word if it's fixable?

Waiting for the adjuster today or tomorrow. The guys at the shop both said they thought it would be totaled.

The kicker...... When he hit me he knocked my car 22' forward and onto a curb and into a parking meter.

The car/truck was never found but i do have his windshield wiper fluid lid as a keepsake.

Does anyone have any experience with insurance companies and totaled autos?

For it to be totalled is unfortunate but probably not surprising with the amount of damage. Also, with that much damage I'm not sure I'd want it back, regardless of how good shops are. Too many things to fix.

I have had one experience (arson on my truck) but may be different in Canada anyways. All I could offer is that you'll probably not have to pay a deductible as it was parked when it happened and you were not in it.

I'm asumming it still runs?

It's crazy that the other car pushed it that far and was still able to limp away. It takes a good bit of force to move a car that far.

I can't believe nobody saw it, maybe it was late though.

That's horrible! It looks like you really kept up on your car (it's way more shiny than mine!) and to have that happen lacks words to actually describe!

On the plus side: You weren't in the car, and even if you were, it appears it stood up pretty damn well! You'd get some mighty fine parts off of that thing!

A few years ago, I had a head on / offset collision with my new Mercedes and it was totalled. Took about 6 months to close out all the paperwork.

First, took it to the most expensive body shop I could find. If it was going to get fixed, the insurance and other SOB was gonna pay for it

Two, did NOT want the car back. There's a feeling whenever you're in an accident that you just want closure and want to move on (to a new car).

Three, any kind of accident is going to potentially cause hidden damage PLUS its going to reduce the resale value of your car (welcome to CarFax and honest folks) which is typically NOT computed into your repair bill.

Four, check your policy. This probably falls into the uninsured motorist catagory, but you may have different riders. No need to talk to or see a lawyer first. Hear what your insurance folks say and sit on it for a bit. Be aware of your rental / replacement rider if you have one!

The most important thing is to slow down and take your time. This is not a game where you can rush through (and oh I wanted to... it's the closure thing).

Comprehensive Damage Should cover this kind of incdent.

I am sure it will but i am afraid that after the deductible and the insurance company trying to give me some stupidly low settlement....... i may end up getting screwed

I had a non-fault accident in CA a couple years back. I hit a couple loose dogs on a highway late one night. The insurance company will generally total a car in that type of shape.

When it happened to me, it was 2005 and i had a 98 accord V6 in perfect shape and 80k miles. I bought it from my mother and all records were immaculate. When the accident happened i had just put on new struts, cv boots, timing belt and the works as i expected the car to last another 100k. In short the car was worth more to me than KBB value.

The insurance process was quick and they evaluated the car in around a week and had an offer out pretty quick. This is how they get you. No Matter What, DO NOT ACCEPT FIRST OFFER. I was offered 7k for my car on first offer. I pulled all the local papers and website info i could, to find what i considered an exact match for my car (same miles, trim, upgrades, maintenance records, number of owners) and came to a price of 12k which was a bit inflated on my end.

After several weeks of arguing and proving my point with factual evidence, they gave me an offer of 11k and i accepted. And thus i purchased my 4runner.

Good luck, and remember the insurance company is out to make a buck, you are not their primary interest. The majority of people will not argue and provide factual data so hold your ground and make sure you are happy with the salvage value they provide. You insure a vehicle for replacement value, not what the INS company deems your vehicle is worth.

P.s. dont forget to list your upgrades and mods in your value. Even if you did the work. I even listed monies paid for maintenance, this was a contested point, but in the long run it helped as i couldnt find a replacement that had just had all that work done. Most cars they will counter you with are being sold as maintenance is coming due (timing, suspension, etc)

Oh and i had the caveman insurance.
