I finally got around to removing a brake drum to take a look at my parking brake (6 day 55 hour workweek FTL)...
It appears that the levers into the drums that apply the E-brake have been stuck for some time, in the 'on' position... I had to take a hammer to the lever where the cable attaches to get the shoes to loosen up enough to remove it.
Obviously I'm in need of replacing my brake shoes, as I think they've basically been dragging for at least a year (I always thought the truck felt hard to push in neutral).
My problem is this: need to find a way to unstick my E-brake levers in the drum, and keep them unstuck, as I want my E-brake to work (hell, I spent a year searching before I finally found a new front cable). What's the best way to fix this?
Also, I'm not the best when it comes to working on vehicles, am I better off just taking it in for a brake job? Is the cost difference worth the idea of having it done quickly, easily and right?
