TheKent Adventure Thread

Saw this thread earlier... cut and pasted it to send home to my personal computer. Just had to take a moment and really go through it and absorb it.

1) Fantastic photos. Just.... top notch.

2) Love that you were out wheeling with the stock suspension and just got out.

3) The tidbit about "just get a map, and start picking days". Truth man. I need to be reminded of that now and then. Thanks.

4) I wanted to see these pics again before I went to sleep so I'd be dreaming of off-roading all night. lol

Awesome thread. Pure awesome.

I blinked and this year is gone. A lot has changed. Personal life stuff isn't as fun as truck stuff. So on with the photos. I moved to LA. In that process I found myself with a week off, so I made a list minute trip to Utah. About 9 days with plenty of dirt along the way. Slept in the back of the truck every night. Wouldn't change a thing about this trip.

Day 1. Joshua Tree to Lake Havasu.
Exploring the back roads of Joshua Tree. It can be really smooth, then turn rocky. Then smooth, with a blind wash. First time I have buried the front in the sand and had spray come over the hood. Not a good feeling.

Day 2. Lake Powell to Southern Utah
Monument Valley isn't worth it. Valley of the Gods is way better.

Day 3. Southern Utah to Moab.
Woke up to some rain. Which spoiled some Moab plans, but still had plenty of fun. Did Gemini Bridges to Schaefer to Potash. Gemini was nice, but nothing crazy. Schaefer is crazy visually, but that's it. Potash was mind blowing. I talked to an 'Adventure' shop in town, and the girl said, "White Rim is basically a really long Potash that isn't worth the time it takes when you can just run Potash."

Day 4. Having been in the truck driving for the last several days. Today was a hike day. Bummed around Arches early until the crowds showed up. Then skipped East about 20 miles following the river. Stunning drive out to Fisher Towers. The storms skirted around me luckily and made for some nice clouds.

Day 5. Moab to Escalante to Lake Powell.
Factory Butte is a weird emptiness. I wanted to explore more, but all the rains had turned many of the roads to mud. Being alone, the thought of getting stuck did not sound as fun as just exploring in other areas. Haha. After that hiked around the park for a minute. Then drove South to some slot canyons right around sunset. Then got stupid, and pushed on to Lake Powell. I knew this was going to difficult. About 80 miles of dirt through no-mans land. GPS said 4hrs. And it was every bit of it. Probably 20 miles of it was actually a wash. I left at sunset which made this part of the drive a little nerve racking. But alas I made it, and had a beautiful sunrise at Alstrom Point.

Day 6. Lake Powell to North Rim.
When camping, the sun comes up, you wake up. It was a fantastic spot to see the sunrise. But I started pushing early, and made my way towards the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I had seen the South Rim a few years ago. I don't get that same spiritual experience most people get. North Rim was the same, but I did appreciate seeing the trees turning. I pushed on to Zion. I had planned on spending some time here as I love that place, but holy hell, I have never seen so many people there. So I was headed out of town, wondering where I was going to sleep. I saw a dirt road cutting up a the hill so I went exploring. It wasn't far before it got steep, and at the top there was a great little free-for-all campground with some fellow dirtbags escaping the crowds.

Day 7. Zion to Big Bear
Got out early, of course. Story of the trip. Made my through Vegas thinking, "I should stop and treat myself to a hotel. Nahhhh, Keep driving." This was the Sunday night of the shooting. Bizarre. I have been to the South side of Big Bear, so this time I went North. Found some random dirt roads and drove up the hills. Laid in the hammock under a tree and just relaxed, let the sun go down and spent my last night in the truck. The next morning it was back to reality. I think by this point I was really tired of taking photos, and considering I spent most of the day laying in a hammock, there's nothing to really show. But this was the last day of the trip so now you know the story.

For a last minute trip, everything went amazing. Rolled with the punches on the weather some. To be expected. Was outside the entire time except for 10 minutes in the grocery store. Slept in Motel 4 every night. Utah is an amazing place. So much diversity of landscape in such close proximity. I know Moab is Mecca for 4wd, but there's so much to explore besides just driving expensive toys on big rocks.

Best thread of 2017 (says the new member).
Great pics.

When is Toyota just going to hire you to shoot for them and give you a "company" vehicle?

Excellent work.

WOW some of those pictures are Amazing !

But if you tell me those were taken with an Iphone I will have to banish you from your thread lol !

First, great thread and AMAZING pictures!

I kind not agree with the girl; My first experience with the 4Runner off-road was the eastern side of the White Rim Road and back. There is really nice view and Monument Basin is one of them. My plan is to do the full loop next time.

Keep wheeling! And by the way, I prefer the later posts since you add more details about the places you went. This is useful for all of us planing to explore these places.
