Picked up my 97 a month ago and have some problems that I can't find on here that I need to fix.

1} high idle when start up runs like it for 5 mins. 1500rpm then goes down to mormal but is always there when start up but not that high when stopping here and there.

2} shifts hard in reverse and drive best way to explain it, it clungs but after driving for awhile not that bad thinking it has to do with number 1

I paid 1500 for it with 118k miles 2wd and I knew these problems when I bought it but for the price and condition I wasn't passing it up. I have 2 other problems but because of this fourm I now how to fix them. Thanks in advance

High idle is pretty normal for most cars during initial start-up as long as it drops down to normal within a few minutes. start-up at 1500 rpm's is pretty high. Mine usually starts up at 900 rpm and then drops down to normal. Try disconnecting your negative cable from your battery to reset the ECU.

Hard shifting is normally a sign of low tranny fluid. I'm sure you've already checked the fluid (Hot and cold). Assuming the color of your fluid is good, run a few drain and fills over the next 5-10K miles and see if it improves.

I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with your idle. If you're fluid is clean, I wouldn't panic over either of these issues. Just do some methodical troubleshooting starting with the easy stuff.

Great price for a vehicle with such low mileage. Fantastic find.

EDIT: Use the Google Search feature up top. I just typed in "Hard Shifting" and came up with 10 pages of threads. do the same with "High Idle" and I'm sure you'll find just as many.

Get yourself a ScanGuageII or similar so you can always keep an eye on engine and tranny temps (and lots more) and do the tranny cooler mod immediately if it's not done yet. The SGII will also tell you any error codes so might get you pointed in the right direction. I always let the motor get 100 degrees before going and it drops to normal idle by that time too.

Thanks for the advice I'll disconnect the battery and see if that works. Tranny fluid is good I'll look into the mode and seed how hard that is

You're in luck. mtbtim just did a video on the installation of the most common B&M Cooler that everyone uses. There's also a pretty good video that Speedy did at Speedy's Garage.
