Things to do on Auzzie trip

Posted this in the Auzzie forum a few days ago hoping to get some response. Probably not getting much exposure over there so thought I would link this to a larger audience.

We're looking at preliminary plans for an Auzzie vacation. We'll be visiting friends and then joining a tour.

Question I have is about potential wheeling opportunities. The one tour gives an option at Alice Springs to "take a 4WD safari through the West MacDonnell Ranges into Palm Valley. It travels down the bed of the Finke River..." I realize this is a tourist thing but I'm not into hard core. Just want to get out for the day. Would this be a worthwhile excursion? Any links to the possible tour operator for this day trip? I can't find anything by searching.

Any other worthwhile sights and sounds in Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Darwin, Cairns (already includes the reef) or Sydney for day trips?

Basically looking for some travel insights from anyone who has been there.

Unfortunately I haven't been there. But we have friends in Tasmania and would love to go there some time.
I'm sure there is lots of wheelin possibilities!! - travelling down some river bed.. sounds good..!

Near Sydney I'd head up to the Blue Mountains. Definitely worth it. It's a day trip if you take the train there and back.

I also did a 4wd day trip (nit near Sydney, but they are available everywhere), it was a ride along thing but it was fun. You get a good tour and commentary and they cook you lunch!

I actually thought the Sydeny aquarium was worth visiting, and I bore easily. The numbers of different species they have there are incredible.

Lastly make sure to drink the local beers too. Tooheys New was a personal favorite.

Was already looking at the possibility of a Blues Mountains tour.
Looks like the side trip above (in the brochure) is a ride along.
You just gave my trip a purpose: Auzzie beer tasting is the alterior motive for this vacation!
