Things to do or see in maui

So I have vacation time and need to use or lose.. Best friend lives in Maui figured why not go on a 15 hour plane ride and say HI to her... Never been there don't know much about it. So any tips or key points to check out. I am sure I will have to travel to one of the other islands to see an active valcano but other then that what have you got or what have you personally done?

I wil be there from 15th of Janurary..to 1st of feburary.

Iao Valley is pretty nice, so is Oheo Gulch (7 Sacred Pools).
The pools are down in Hana, a LONG slow ride, not for the feint of heart. A hana trip is definately an all day thing.

As for an active Volcano, Big Island is where it's at.

My wife and I just got back from O'ahu and The Big Island recently. I can tell you all about those islands but I haven't been to Maui yet.

go to the top of the mountain (the only one) in the whee hours and watch the sun come up. well worth every $$.

I head out to Maui almost every spring, and IMO the Hana trip and the Haleakela trip both stink. I am not that into the whole patience thing so it wasnt for me. Depending on where you are staying the Hana trip might not be too bad and the pools are nice. I usually stay in Ka'anapali so the drive really sucks from there.

I suggest you do some whale watching if it is season, go to eat at Aloha mixed plate, Sansei sushi (i think thursday night from 6-7 and 11-12 is 1/2 price sushi). Also Leilani's at Ka'anapali beach has awesome fish tacos and great views.

Baby beach at sunset is awesome as long as you dont look too much like a tourist. Bring some beers and chill out there for a while then head over to the mixed plate for some dinner, and foot around lahina for some late night entertainment.

In all just relax, and stay away from the crazy overpriced places like Mamas fish house and David Pauls. They are great but just not worth the $40 per plate price.

Both times I've been there we stayed at Ka'anapali.

I'll never do the "Drive To Hell (Hana) and Back" again. Pools and waterfalls at the end are nice but the worst thing is you now have to drive all the same way back.

Went up to Haaleakala (sp?) for the morning sunrise (dress warm.) Great view and then did a prearranged horseback ride into the crater (awesome!)

Lahaina was nice. Snorkel trip to Molikini (sp?) and whale watch on a catamarran that leaves from there.

Definitely do a day trip to the Big Island and a helicopter ride.

i would do and see the ocean.

IMHO if you are going to hawaii and arent into 1) surfing or 2) the ocean ; fish, corals,diving, snorkeling etc.etc. then you are wasting your time and money.
Its like going to, wiconsin, youd best see the cheese.

Don't be disappointed if it's too foggy to see the sunrise, most people don't get to cause.. its REALLY foggy, REALLY cold and you must bring sunglasses, it's so bright even with the fog it burns your eyes!
get a jeep, if you rent a sebring or something you wont be able to see the WHOLE island!

the roads to Hana are not to be driven in a sebring, we tried.... almost drove off the cliff! YEAH!

if you go to Lahaina, you can't miss the Ice Cream shops... there is one... and then a surf shop and then another one.. and then another and they are EVERYWHERE!
There are a lot of hidden beaches, totally worth it, on our way to 7 sacred pools we found one, there were 10 people there THE WHOLE DAY! we snorkled and saw crazy lookin fish, it was great.

Do the black sand beach too, it's amazing.

Man I went to Maui in 2006, and it's by far the best vacation I have ever taken. It really is paradise over there, but I hated the road to Hana, I almost threw up around those curvy roads and the locals drive crazy!! A mountain goat ran out in front of us along with a couple of wild roosters.. man there were roosters everywhere.. lol
