Think my A/C exploded

I'll keep it simple, I've had issues with the aircon for years. It usually doesn't engage and if it does it's incredibly weak. Can't recharge it either as last time I tried I had to bring it to a dealership as per-recharge it was 110 PSI over-pressure and far into the red.
Well I was a bit stupid this morning and accidentally bumped the A/C button when turning the heater down on the interstate. Heard a boom, saw a few lights come on my dash and the cabin filled with an awful chemical smell, then a burning smell. All lights turned off eventually (battery discharge and a CEL).
Drove with the windows down for the rest of the trip but the chemical smell only faded near the end, was coming from the vents and there was a little bit of smoke from engine bay and maybe through vents.

There is zero pressure in the system. Running or not, the A/C no longer even tries to engage.
Where do I even start to diagnose this?

Start with a visual inspection of the outside system. Inspect the condenser for any holes or damage, inspect the A/C lines for any tears, inspect the A/C compressor and check to see if anything is off, i.e clutch spin, rear lines condition.
If everything checks out and due to your experience it sounds like either the expansive valve gave out or the Evap core gave out (most likely the Evap since this happened to me 2 years ago).

Willco, I'm gonna be monkeying around in there this week and I'll take a look.
Only things I've seen have been upfront, the serpentine is now a bit torn up and is making some faint noises. Other than that just the lack of pressure and no engagement. (the light still comes on though )
